(90,737 posts)My husband says he really was not told the story of his family until he was 13 -- why it was he had no grandparents, almost no extended family. I don't know if that was when his father told him that he once had another family, another wife, four children, all gone...
I owe my mother, a Colorado teenager during WW II, my early exposure to the stories of fascism, Nazism, and the Holocaust. In her opinion, it was not only Jews who should never forget, but everyone else as well, and that included her own children. But these topics were also still in the news during my 1950s-60s childhood. There were photos. People on this Board sometimes shock me deeply by simply not being aware of certain things. I wonder if the Holocaust has dropped out of high school history books.
Dubya's run-up to the invasion of Iraq gave my late mother in law flashbacks to her last days in Vienna, before she fled to Belgium. Trump's bombast and Cruz's slime give me a deeply crawling sensation -- and when Trump suggested we should have Muslims wear identification, my mind immediately went to the yellow Star of David that Jews were forced to sew on their clothing.
Never forget, this is where it goes.
