Planned Parenthood attack suspect court outburst: "I am guilty"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Robert Lewis Dear, the suspect in the Nov. 27 attack at Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs that killed three people, declared in court on Wednesday that he is guilty, reports CBS Denver.

"I am guilty there will be no trial. I am a warrior for the babies," he said in an outburst in El Paso County court overheard by CBS Denver reporter Rick Sallinger.

The outburst came as lawyers were starting to discuss a motion to allow a camera in the courtroom. The hearing on Wednesday was scheduled to be a formal filing of charges against Dear.

Colorado Springs police have refused to discuss a motive for the fusillade, but there's mounting evidence to suggest 57-year-old Dear was deeply concerned about abortion, having rambled to authorities about"no more baby parts" after his arrest.

He seems to have been active online, so I wonder if he was active on this topic as well.

Given the local police's stance about motive, I don't feel confident they will try to dig into this, though.

In order to accept a guilty plea, the defendant must make a fully informed plea, have the capacity to do so, and admit to each element of the charge.

Rush Limbaugh and Roger Aires BUILT this monster (and just because no one wants to say it doesnt make it untrue) and there should be a way to hold them responsible as well.

Unless there is evidence that Rush Limbaugh specifically encouraged him to attack this clinic.

That drooling idiot has millions of listeners who didn't shoot anyone.

before Limbaugh had a national radio show and before Fox News existed. This is not a new thing and they didn't create it. it's been going on for a long, long time.

What matters is that he make a competent knowing plea of guilt.

Getting to whatever motivated him is relevant if he is not found able to competently admit guilt, and his defense goes for insanity.

It doesn't matter what he says inspired him. Nobody arrested Jodie Foster or the producers of Taxi Driver for shooting Reagan either.

Personally, I've always thought they should have quarantined the dog in the Son of Sam case, just to be on the safe side.

On top of his own admissions, everything he did during his mass shooting was caught on video. He'll be looking at cops lining up around the block to testify against him.

I'll bet that his defense attorneys will try the insanity defense, but if it didn't work for James Holmes, it won't work for Dear.

My personal opinion is that he's gone around the bend and off into the deep end -- but I'm neither psychiatrist nor lawyer; and anyway, law and medicine have different ideas about what's loonie-tunes
