Speaker Paul Ryan told his House Republican colleagues Tuesday morning he is transferring $2 million in cash to the partys campaign arm, and has secured Mitt Romney as the speaker at a major March fundraiser.
The announcement, which came Tuesday morning during a closed party meeting at the Capitol Hill Club, gives a peek into the maturation of Ryans (R-Wis.) political operation. The $2 million transfer is one of the largest by a speaker of the House in a non-election year, according to several GOP sources, and it brings Ryans total transfers to $3 million since becoming speaker Oct. 29. The transfer shows that, despite not traveling as much as former Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, Ryan has the ability to keep the National Republican Congressional Committee afloat in advance of the 2016 elections.
Romney's acceptance of the invitation to speak at the NRCC's March dinner shows the strength and endurance of the Romney-Ryan alliance. The two men, who shared a presidential ticket in 2012, have remained very close friends and confidants. Romney urged Ryan to seek the speakership, and came to Washington for his swearing in ceremony.
The NRCC March dinner which is being chaired by Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger is the party's largest fundraiser of the year.

One certainly should not count out Mitt Romney as the GOP candidate as the result of their clusterfunk of a primary...

(17,087 posts)I guess Ryan has some administrative influence now over GOP finances as their top public official.

(32,082 posts)The filing deadlines long past for most primaries and the voting will be over in many of the big ones. The days of drafting a candidate are long gone.

(32,082 posts)The closest would be Eisenhower in 1952 when both the Democrats and Republicans wanted him to be their candidate. Even then Eisenhower just barely got the nomination against Taft.
