BUT JIMMY CARTER DID IT! debunking the new RW talking point

This is a Washington Post article from November 11, 1979. Actual journalism.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1979/11/11/carter-orders-deportation-of-illegal-students/2f242d98-cf30-46bb-8e8a-c0898f45eda8/

Summary:
There was no deportation of 50,000 Iranians.

Pres. Carter ordered the review of the student visas of the 50,000 Iranian students. If they were over their stay they were made to leave. The others were asked to leave but they had the right to full hearing and appeal.

If they or the other roughly 80,000 Iranian citizens in the US at the time feared for their safety upon return to Iran, they could apply for refugee status.

He did that based on nationality. Unlike what the OP suggests about 15,000 were deported. He did that based on 8 USC 1182 which gives the President the right to ban any aliens or any class of aliens for as long as he/she sees fit. On the books since 1952.

Did that in an interview with Jim Lehrer on PBS in August of 2004. Lehrer about filled his britches: No one of Carter's stature had described the GOP thusly until then.

Come to think of it, no one has done so since.

They were untouchable and they knew it. They held their convention in NYC basically dancing on graves while wearing Purple Heart band aids and no one called them on it.

Because I could have debunked it from personal experience. The year after the Iranian revolution, one of my next door neighbors in the dorm was an Iranian student. He didn't get deported, and he wasn't threatened by anyone on campus that I am aware of.

Typical fact-free nonsense from Ann Coulter. Too bad for her, in this case the person she's lying about is still alive to give her the dressing down she deserves.

15,000 were deported. Whether you friend complied with the order in 1979 I don't know. But it was given.
