(53,871 posts)The Daily News has been on a roll lately with these progressive-leaning covers.
I left New York in '06 when the "News" was fairly conservative, although not as much as the "Post".
Do you know if there has been a change in ownership?

(14,691 posts)I think the NYDN can be conservative. They still print photos of women in bikinis. It can be pretty tacky. It's kind of a mixed bag.

(598 posts)I always enjoyed watching Mort Zuckerman on the McLaughlin Group. He hasn't been on lately, but he used to be a regular. I remember when he predicted the banking crisis of 2008. I never knew what a credit default swap was until he (frantically) mentioned them.
Watching that show, I noticed Obama has fallen out of favor with Mort. I think it's mostly over Israel. Mort had supported Obama in 2008, but seems to support Hillary now.
Mort Zuckerman was also a guest at a Clinton fundraiser in The Hamptons. He donated $25,000.

(53,871 posts)I was in the business while in NY worked for Newsday for years.
The old hands I worked with though told me that the Post wasn't always such a rag, back in the days when New York had the multiple papers Times, News, Post, Mirror, Brooklyn Eagle, Long Island Press, Herald Tribune, World Telegraph, and more.
That was the golden age of newspapers. Long gone now. I get most of my news online now.

(1,828 posts)with the NY Daily News. Calling them Libtards, leftist commies. All kinds of names and swearing to put them out of business. It's the first time in years, for the last couple of weeks, the NY Daily News has been honest in it's front pages

(24,654 posts)between the Trump campaign (policy suggestions, follower behavior, rhetoric, etc.) and late 1920s/early 1930s Germany. I've never claimed Trump is a Hitler clone or that his presidency would inevitably lead to a Holocaust or World War, but clearly I am not the only one who sees uncomfortable similarities between his campaign and the nascent Nazi party. I fail to see how anyone can't be totally creeped out by this guy. He literally makes my stomach turn when I see a photo or hear his voice. And I am using the word literally correctly!

(60,010 posts)And that is very unfortunate.
fortunately, Trump is appearing at a time when there are a LOT of people over 50 who DO have a sense of history and can recognize the pattern of tyranny.

(60,010 posts)Most people do not read history* once they are out of school, despite having the world at their fingers now on the internet.
And people are now used to getting information fed to them FAST and in small bites.
this does not encourage thoughtful and lengthy thinking.
* even fewer are readers/followers of money/economic issues.
Milton Mayer wrote a book about how the German people were led into Hitler's nightmare, and it is amazingly the same principles as right now.
He talked to some German people post war, they described how they were led step by step into accepting behavior they would have rejected previously.
The book is called
They Thought They Were Free
and is actually available online, free download from the Internet Archive:

(598 posts)Trump knows how to grab the headlines, but I still doubt he will get the nomination.

(56,829 posts)First, it was a wall for the Mexicans, then a database for Muslims, then banning all Muslims from entering the US... what's next? Hindus? Buddhists? The "wrong" kind of Christian?

(60,010 posts)THAT idea has surfaced more than once in this country.
Ideally, the American Taliban would like a country of all white people, who belong to the "right" church.
And women would "know their place"

(7,960 posts)We always got the "News" in our house. A little lowbrow but they had great writers like Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamll--Gail Collins too before she moved to the 'Times'. Sure they were too uncritically supportive of the NYPD but you always got the feeling they were on the side of the little guy. Besides--you could read it standing up on the Subway and they had the best comics. As a librarian, I later switched my allegiance to the New York Times because I needed a broader view of the world and had a better crossword puzzle, but I still read the News from time to time and really, lately they have been on a roll.
