but it may very well be before children are able to understand the questions.

It has taken a lifetime to fully overcome that conditioning.

To see the full spectrum of human beauty.

To hate all the people that your parents hate...

Horrifying.

It's not surprising that the white kids would prefer the white dolls and think the white dolls were nicer, prettier, etc. It's natural for them to prefer a doll that is similar to them.

What is really awful is that black children prefer the white dolls and think the black dolls are ugly and bad - even as they identify those dolls as being most similar to them!

Imagine growing up thinking that you are seen - even by yourself - as ugly and bad. What does that do to a child?

6. Self concept has always been important. We see it in all races.

The question we now need to answer is how do we change this? And I have seen this develop in very young children.

One child I especially know about is a middle child who thinks everyone hates her. She thought that at 3 years of age.

And this is what every teacher and parent in the world should aim at - to give their child a good self concept. The question is how to do it.

and thinking of how they've learned those kinds of sad choices already Schools, from play-school up need to celebrate diversity in much more meaningful ways, imo - daily ... whatever it takes. Society needs to also, obviously.

The racial profiling, minority disenfranchisement, the poverty associated with it, the indiscriminate prison sentencing and toll it takes on families left behind no doubt play into the attitudes of parents who may try their hardest not to let their rage/disappointment/however it affects them, affect their children ... but kids just sense things. It would be heartbreaking as a parent to know your child felt this way about their own skin colour, and it should be also for those whose children feel this way about others. Really a sad video to watch.
