School Cancels Reading After Parents Threaten to Sue

http://www.adweek.com/galleycat/school-cancels-reading-after-parents-threaten-to-sue/113128

A Wisconsin elementary school has cancelled the reading of a children’s book about a transgender girl after parents threatened to sue claiming that the reading would be a violation of parents rights.

The school’s principal, school psychologist and counselor sent out a note to parents alerting them to the reading of I Am Jazz by Jessica Hershel and Jazz Jennings. The note explained that a student at the school identifies as a girl but has male anatomy and the reading would support that student.

“We believe all students deserve respect and support regardless of their gender identity and expression, and the best way to foster that respect and support is through educating students about the issue of being transgender,” the note read, reports The Cap Times.

The Florida organization Liberty Counsel contacted the school on behalf of several parents threatening to sue and the reading was cancelled.

I can pretty much guarantee that the "Liberty Counsel" are not parents and they don't have any kids that go to that school. Fuck them.

Does anyone know, right off the top of their head (don't waste time googling it because I am not going to), which states Liberty Counsel's lawyers are licensed to practice law in?

Not sure of the legal terms but a lawyer not licensed in a state can get a lawyer licensed there to take the case then the out of state attorney can do all the work.

It's indeed a fairly common practice, although state rules differ about procedure.

I also find complaints about the choice of lawyers foolish. It's no different when conservatives complain when the ACLU takes a case. The only thing that matters is whether the claims asserted are legally meritorious.

I'd only criticize about the spurious legal arguments Liberty Counsel attempts to use in the cases they take. That and they way they seem to use their clients to make their theocratic points with little regard for the good of their clients.

They should be reading the bible where it talks about sending a bear to kill kids for saying an old guy is bald and Lot's daughters getting him drunk and having sex with him in a cave

30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. - Genesis 19:30-36

Good wholesome stories for the whole family.

They're based in Florida. This school is in Wisconsin. Do they have kids that go to that school? No! Are they registered in that school district? No! Do they have any constitutional grounds? No! They're a product of the right wing outrage machine, nothing more. They sue school districts like this because it gets their name in the news. They're just a publicity machine and that's it. Fuck them.

That group is in Florida. The school is in Wisconsin. There are no parents involved here. It's a lunatic fringe religious group imposing it's pure hatred on someone they don't agree with. That is it.
