Orrin Hatch: one god to rule us all

Hatch wrote in a recent OP-ED:
“The erroneous wall-of-separation doctrine narrows the role of religion in public discourse, fueling the view that religion is a private matter rather than a fundamental precept of American civil society and leading many to fall prey to the disturbing claim that religious freedom doesn’t extend much further than the church door,” Hatch wrote.

As you would guess, he doesn't want just any religion but the one he deems the "right" one:
"The more dominant view, according to Hatch, was John Adams’ model, which instituted a “mild and equitable establishment of religion” that enshrined “Christian piety and virtue.”

I see a government corporate theocracy in our future.

I. Will. Not. Submit.

There has been no narrowing of the role of religion in public discourse. If you want to advocate for a particular political point of view and claim god's endorsement for that viewpoint, you can do so. What you can't do is expect everyone to acquiesce to that viewpoint solely on that basis. I know, too bad, so sad for you.

In a shorter form, "I do X because God said so." Fine and dandy. All part of our public discourse. "You have to do X because God said so." Big difference. Not in alignment with our Constitution, history, tradition, or fundamental precepts.

the minute someone says the latter, they have completely disqualified themselves from participation in any meaningful discourse and may be utterly disregarded.

not just Christians. The word Allah is almost identical to the Aramaic word Alaha (with different spellings), so it seems that Jesus would have called God something very similar to Allah in his time (assuming that he was a real guy).

I never could understand why Jews, Christians and Muslims have such a hard time with each other when they all worship the same god and revere the same prophets.

Say that to your average xian and you are more likely to get attacked or worse. It is always "their" god and "my" god. Same in this case. Which version of the bible? Which xian perspective on religion? His? Someone else? Who will get to decide? Will there be laws I have to follow this new state religion? Will I be stoned to death if I do not? If I have female children, will they be sold as sex slaves to pay off my debt? Will your church require all of my dead ancestors to be posthumously converted before I am am allowed to vote?

Question...more questions....

I have educated a few of my more liberal Christian friends on the commonalities of the three major religions, but I don't bother even trying with the Fundies.
