3. Actually - even though Ben Carson is weird - his position here is not as far out as it seems

Here point was that US policy should be to keep the refugees in the near by refugee camps - and to either have them absorbed in the the middle east or returning to Syria at some point. The Halloween candy comment was that the US could give billions to support those camps - and his point is that while this amount sounds big - it is the amount annually spent on Halloween candy. (I don't know if he is meaning this should be paid by charities or the federal government.)

This actually was the Obama administration position for a few years and the US has donated the most money for this. If a political solution were reasonably likely and imminent, it makes sense. At this point, that is not clear and it's a huge burden on Jordan and Lebanon.

5. Yet more nuttiness from a religion

It's getting to the point where most of the crazy or horrible things can be traced back to the religious extremism or beliefs of the person who commits the act. Not to say all religious people are crazy, but a vast majority of people who commit horrible acts have an extreme belief system in their background. People who are capable of believing far fetched ideas are often capable of committing horrible, extreme acts. We must reinforce reality, for once you stray from reality, who can say what is possible and might seem reasonable.
