The shooter who killed three and injured several others at the site of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs remains something of an enigma, and while both sides of the political aisle have chimed in about the shooting it isnt clear at all that he was particularly or specifically motivated by politics to commit his crimes:
If a Muslim man shot up a synagogue and told the cops No more Jews, would his motives be enigmatic?
If a black man shot a cop and said fuck the police while being arrested, would we have to wait to figure out his motivations?
But if a crazy loner gun nut shoots a bunch of people in front of a planned parenthood, carrying explosive devices with him, and states No more baby parts, which JUST SO FUCKING HAPPENS to be rhetoric tossed around by right to lifers the past few months, and its a GIANT FUCKING RIDDLE what his motivations might have been. Its a real fucking whodunit. Lemme guess, you probably think Dr. Tillers killer just had a thing against lab coats.

(65,057 posts)How does that hurt the mayor to say something like "highly charged rhetoric with little basis in fact from the political campaigns may just have made this a more dangerous place"
Doesn't he look like he's truly concerned about the safety of the folks who live there?
OK, i know there is some reasonably high degree of nutjobbery there, but still concern that inflammatory rhetoric inflames seems like something that would look good on the next election poster.

There's no damn 'mystery'. Fiorina and her fellow hatemongers got exactly the sort of lunatic response their hate incites, and then suddenly wander around going 'I haven't a clue why that happened!'

(46,720 posts)It's not that they can't connect this terrorist with Christian-right rhetoric. It's that they would have to expose the fact that these Christian right church groups covertly approve of what he did.
And, once we come to terms with that fact, where do we go from there?

(9,895 posts)I assume right wing whenever "Christian" gets attached to anything because while I am not a believer, I have found it far more likely than not that a progressive Christian has a totally different interpretation of Christ than "evangelicals" do. Also, left-leaning Christians tend to focus a whole lot more on the central messages of Christ (love, peace, charity, understanding) than the dogmatic verses the right-wing nutjobs focus on.

HAD this been a LW black terrorist, we would already be setting up checkpoints all over the country and calling for a state of emergency. However, this guy just happens to be the Right color and associated with the Right political party.
I wonder if they stopped at Burger King to get him a burger?

Stochastic terrorism is the use of mass communications to incite random actors to carry out violent or terrorist acts that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable. In short, remote-control murder by lone wolf.

Never happen...we get 'shooter' so that the kiddies don't learn about the horrible RWing in this country. Might cause them to vote Democratic when they grow up.

(6,829 posts)I suspect that at this very moment the POWERS THAT BE in Colorado Springs are COACHING this suspect on the narrative they want him to describe for his motivations.
His first public statement will be something like; "Planned Parenthood? What the fuck is that? I was there to rob a bank!"

(17,200 posts)But I believe he could stand in the middle of the village square naked and painted blue, screaming "I hate abortion and want to kill everyone who goes to Planned Parenthood," and the media could actually play it straight and cover it faithfully, and it still would get a "big deal" from the mass of people in the country who don't give a rat's fundament about women's rights. And it would probably get more sympathy from the 30% or so who want to quash them. So in this case, remaining "unclear" about Mr Dear's obvious motive may have an unintended silver lining. Oh, I don't deny for a moment that the RW media want to suppress this, but I think they misjudge the power of their own rhetoric. We have been brainwashing the people of this country for generations to hate women, and that kind of conditioning is not going to be obliterated because somebody shoots a few people. We take that sort of thing in stride in this country.

(13,869 posts)What I find frightening is that the media didn't immediately come out and condemn the Republican candidates for fomenting this type of behavior. By allowing the "confusion" about his motives to remain they are encouraging more of this to take place. Right wing candidates are free to spew hate speech with no media repercussions.

(10,476 posts)What the Republican candidates are doing is no longer considered "protected speech" in my book. These are deliberate, concerted efforts on the part of Fiorina, Cruz, Trump, and others to get their right-wing base to "rise up" and save the poor, innocent children that Planned parenthood is (falsely) alleged to be killing.
If some imam in an American mosque goaded his followers to behead non-believers, they GOP would be screaming for his arrest.

(18,318 posts)The Narratives should be obvious, now: Political killings are due to (1) mental health probs; (2) NRA. If Jimmy Carter can call the GOP "extremist" in 2004 (August, PBS, to Jim Lehrer) ANYBODY can.
The Far Right is by far the most powerful force in U.S. politics today. You DO NOT cross them up. I'm laying $$ the MSM DOES NOT refer to the GOP as extremist (let alone abetting terrorism) in a routine news story.
