Dashcams Didn’t Pick Up Audio of Chicago Shooting Because of Battery Issue

Additional video has come out from police dashcams on the night of Laquan McDonald‘s shooting. On Tuesday night, the Chicago police released disturbing video of Officer Jason Van Dyke repeatedly shooting McDonald, including a few times after he fell to the ground.

Four additional videos were released yesterday, showing footage from dashcams in other police vehicles. One of the videos shows McDonald running as a police car follows.

One thing that all of the videos lack: working audio. As ABC7 reported, only muffled siren sounds can be heard, nothing else; not what officers say and not the gunshots.

So ABC7 asked police officials what happened. This is what they said:

On Tuesday, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy addressed the absence of audio on dash-cam videos.

“There were apparently technical difficulties, but in no way shape or form is there any evidence that anything was tampered with,” McCarthy said.

Wednesday night, a Chicago police official said there was no audio because the batteries in the dash-cams had been put in improperly and facing the wrong direction, which disables the audio part of the recorder. CPD says officers responsible for maintaining their dash-cams are being retrained to avoid this.

You can hear distant sirens but not close up stuff. That isn't a battery problem.... peacebird Nov 2015 #2

did not want the the sounds at the scene to be heard. I also noticed that when the murdering cop got out of his car the driver of the dashcam cruiser creeped rightward and reframed the victim into the left side of the camera's field of view, which just happened to avoid recording the cops' actions.
