Got a fireplace? This starter kit works and is all MADE IN THE USA!

I don't make a dime off this post. I posted this in support of good quality products MADE IN THE USA and workers paying taxes.

Marta bought one for us and it works just the way it is supposed to. Just be sure to use some kindling. her review will be up on the site in a few days.

About Adirondack Firestone Co.
All Fired Up

Nothing says cozy like curling up in front of a crackling fire, but you can’t get comfy until the fire gets going. Sometimes that’s a challenge, especially when you’ve just sent all your old newspapers to be recycled and there’s not a scrap of dry kindling nearby.

For foolproof fire-starting, we’re reaching for the FireLighter from Adirondack Firestone Company. It’s easy to use, you don’t need newspaper or kindling, and it works every time. Brothers Todd and Chad Keehfus teamed up to create the system, which uses an oil-soaked stone to get the flames going.

The FireLighter starter kit includes a ceramic vessel, two bottles of the company’s Candle & Lamp Oil, and a FireStone attached to a steel rod. To get started, soak the FireStone in the oil-filled vessel. Next, roll the FireStone lightly in fireplace ashes, ignite it with a match or lighter, and place the lit stone under the firewood in the fireplace. The FireLighter stone will burn for about 15 to 20 minutes, igniting the rest of the firewood.

Todd and Chad founded Adirondack Firestone Company to celebrate the charm and spirit of New York's mountainous Adirondack region. They’ve also made it a priority to work with U.S. suppliers. The ceramic vessel is handcrafted in the pottery corridor between Columbus, Ohio, and Wheeling, West Virginia, the lamp oil comes from Texas, and the steel rods are made in Greene, N.Y., using machinery that dates back to the early 20th century. The FireLighter kits are assembled in Syracuse, N.Y., at a facility that employs and trains people with developmental disabilities. From start to finish, FireLighter is hard to resist.

The front opening is too tall. We have trouble getting the draw to start. We would have to tear out the the stone design and rebuild. Way too expensive. We already raised the chimney height 2 feet when we needed chimney work.

The kit uses sootless smokeless lamp oil. No more smoke in the room on start up here. This really solved the problem inexpensively. Continuing costs of the oil are very reasonable.

Edit: We would not need it in the dinning room fireplace. But we almost never use that one. It has been at least 2 years with no use. When we do use it we burn Jave Logs: http://pinemountainfire.com/products/pine-mountain-java-log-4-hour-firelogs

My parents have a wood stove, and they use it for heat for 5 months a year. The stove burns out most nights, so they clean out the ash in the morning, and relight it.

If its an improvement, I would buy it. They easily light 100 fires a year.

I use my fireplace once or twice a year. Its not worth it to me.

you need to fish the stone from under the ashes?

Our current home does not have a fireplace. Our previous home did. I sometimes miss it. So far, it has mot been cold enough to use a fireplace (and we live in the Twin Cities).

Literally as close as your door if you have a downed pine tree.
Kindling sized bits of wood.....actually you need no more than a 6 inch thin piece----roars into flame when lit and will start any fire.
Also smells great sitting around the house.
