News anchors during live events like what's happening in Colorado say the stupidest things. On...

...MSNBC just now the lady said "night is very clearly falling" at the scene. At 3:30PM?????

And that's just one example of all the stupid things already said since this story broke.

Sunset in Colorado Springs, CO

Three factors
1. Time zones. Dallas's sunset is 4:21 pm MST.
2. Colorado Springs is north of Dallas. If all else were equal, in fall/winter, the sun would set earlier in Colorado Springs.
3. Colorado Springs is west of Dallas. If all else were equal, Colorado Springs would have a later sunset any time of year.

Since Colorado Springs is north and west of Dallas, two competing factors are at work.

we live south of it and it is already getting a tad dark, due to cloud cover mind you.

and it went from nice and bright to dark and flat in ten minutes flat. We beat the leading edge of the storm cell by minutes.

Ah now time for me to go though photos and videos and sound and write a news story.

I'm all kinds of sore... chasing 20 somethings with 50 pounds of gear is getting harder to do. (I need to hit the gym no doubt any more)

the eastern slop of the rocky mountains starts looking like night as soon as the sun dips below the mountains to the west ( and in c-springs, the mountains and foothills are right there).

so, yeah, it gets dark about this time of day.

not to mention that it is overcast and snow is falling. This is a good day to be home early with a fire in the fireplace (except that wood smoke is a major contributor to the area smog).

Nobody knows for sure what's going on. So after awhile the coverage just starts to go in a big, spinning circle, just adding to the confusion.

If they want to go wall-to-wall with the coverage, they should probably just tap in to local news channels and let them handle it, rather than trying to analyze and speculate in a studio 3,000 miles away.

Heard a lot of dumbass stuff this afternoon from the woman anchoring on MSNBC, mainly because she just doesn't know what to say and has a lot of time to fill. Luckily, Cliff Van Sant with his font of wisdom showed up, so she's kind of off the hook now.
