Black, Hispanics More Optimistic About the American Dream

Their family wealth is typically one-tenth that of whites. They earn considerably less. They are more likely to be unemployed or in poverty and they are less likely to own a home.

Yet despite all this, blacks and Hispanics are far more optimistic about being able to live the American Dream these days than whites.

Some 55% of blacks and 52% of Hispanics say it's easier for them to achieve the American Dream than it was for their parents, compared to 35% of whites, according to a new CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation poll on race.

Whites, however, aren't as optimistic about their chances of living the American Dream. That's likely because many of their parents were able to buy homes and send their kids to college, possibly even on one income.

I do not agree with the idea that the fact that the parents of white people did so well is the reason for white people being less optimistic about the American Dream than blacks and Hispanics. I think the real problem is FOX News and right wing talk radio. White people are constantly being told by FOX New and right wing talk radio that they are under attack and things are so bad for them. This talking point makes its way into the mainstream media. The show Counterspin did a show in which the host(s) pointed out that the mainstream media had picked up the story that white men were being damaged by the economy. The host(s) then pointed out that white males had the lowest unemployment in the United States and had the most wealth. It is easy to feel that the American Dream has left you behind when many people are telling you that the sky is falling.
