Police have arrested two men they have been seeking in connection with a shooting at the Black Lives Matter encampment Monday night.

Minneapolis police said they arrested a 23-year-old white man in Bloomington at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. A second shooting suspect, a 32-year-old Hispanic man, was arrested in south Minneapolis at 12:05 p.m., police said on Twitter. The search for other suspects continues.

Authorities are weighing whether to treat the shooting of five people protesting near the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct Monday night as a hate crime, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday morning.

The victims, all black men — ages 19 through 43 — were taken to hospitals with noncritical injuries, according to police.

The shootings occurred at 10:45 p.m. on Morgan Avenue N. about a block north of the precinct station.

On Tuesday afternoon, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis held a rally outside the Fourth Precinct police station before gathering several hundred protesters to march to City Hall in downtown Minneapolis. Another large group of activists remained outside the police station.

Had a large walkout today- this afternoon. My kids (Jr and freshman) were considering joining in. I could see a helicopter hovering and following the mass of humanity that was on that march. I hope my kids joined in.

The Associated Press is reporting that five people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Minneapolis were shot by a group of white supremacists on Monday evening.

This is not a surprise.

The appeal and power of old-fashioned, overt and transparent white racism is growing in the United States. The prime example of this phenomenon is the rise of Donald Trump, but the GOP front-runner is but one data point in a longer trend. Since the election of Barack Obama, white supremacists have increased their enrollment of new members. To that end, they have infiltrated Tea Party organizations to recruit racially resentful and angry white people who are beginning to think about politics in terms of “white group interests.”

While anxiety about ISIS dominates the American news, the FBI has in fact identified domestic terrorism from white, right-wing Christians as the greatest domestic terrorism threat to the United States since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The right-wing news-entertainment media complex routinely uses eliminationist and violent rhetoric to describe liberals and progressives. There, the implicit (and often explicit) narrative is that those people who are not members of the American right-wing are “traitors,” “un-American” and deserving of whatever violence comes to them. This is not empty talk, hyperbole or “playful” rhetoric designed to cheer on Republicans and build up morale before a presidential election. The right-wing media has actually weaponized its followers. The results are those black folks killed by Dylann Roof in Charleston, the women’s reproductive health doctor George Tiller, and the other victims of right-wing domestic terrorists shot dead at Sikh Temples, Jewish Community Centers, and elsewhere in the United States.

Two videos of masked men are generating new attention after five activists associated with the Black Lives Matter movement were shot on Monday night by assailants who reportedly fit a similar description as the men in the videos.

It is not clear if there is any connection between the men in the videos and the suspects who have been arrested. It is also not clear if there is any connection between the men in the video and those who visited the movement's encampment on Thursday night. The descriptions of the men in each cases, however, are very similar.

Oleuchi Omeoga, a protester who witnessed the shooting on Monday, told the Associated Press that the perpetrators of the crime were three masked men. She said the men “weren’t supposed to be” at the encampment, where activists have been protesting the death of 24-year-old Jamar Clark, a black man shot in the head by police on Nov. 15.

After the masked men left the encampment, several protesters followed them to a street corner. The men in masks then fired, according to Omeoga. None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

Black Lives Matter Minneapolis posted a 90-second video to its Facebook page on Friday of two masked young white men spewing racial epithets in a car, apparently on their way to the Black Lives Matter protest encampment. The organization said in an e-mail that supporters sent them the video, but did not provide additional information about its origins.......................
