Like thxgiving. A local restaurant stays open half day just for people who for some reason wouldn't have a thxgiving meal otherwise. They bring unsold food to a local soup kitchen at close.

I always considered that different than an optional shopping trip in a way.

But I may bake some cookies and give some to the people at the stations we stop at.

We have to drive two hours each way to get to the in laws. On the route we take over in the morning there are no rest stops so we usually stop at a gas station to use a restroom. On the way back it used to be we'd have to fill up the tank and there were only two stations open on the way out of town. Now with the Prius, we don't have to stop on the way home.

I was a waitron for many years. Working on holidays and weekends was a given. Not saying it's right but there are many jobs that don't fall into the standard weekdays-only format.

I would rather live in a country where people employed in the service industry were paid a living wage. It's no good staying home to celebrate a holiday with your family if you can't afford it.

draw the line. at the very least employees should be given the option of whether to work or not, with no negative consequences if they choose not to.

Mind you, most restaurants I worked at closed on T-Gives because there wasn't enough business worth staying open. Bonus for me because restaurant orphan-Thanksgivings are glorious.

Equating big box stores with restaurants is your first mistake. Claiming that those who are arguing that big box stores shouldn't be open are saying no one should have to work on Thanksgiving is another one. No one ever said that no one ever worked on Thanksgiving until Big Box stores came alone. Mistake number three.

The National Day of Mourning is an annual protest organized since 1970 by Native Americans of New England on the fourth Thursday of November, the same day as Thanksgiving in the United States. It coincides with an unrelated but similar protest, Unthanksgiving Day, held on the West Coast.
The organizers consider the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day as a reminder of the democide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples. Participants in the National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. They want to educate Americans about history. The event was organized in a period of Native American activism and general cultural protests. The protest is organized by the United American Indians of New England (UAINE). Since it was first organized, social changes have resulted in major revisions to the portrayal of United States history, the government's and settlers' relations with Native American peoples, and renewed appreciation for Native American culture.

A foolish constituency is the hobgoblin of little minds. However, if believing that all things should be consistently applied regardless of context, nuance or detail, I tip my hat to your absolutism and your confusion. It's human nature.
