(4,246 posts)Like thxgiving. A local restaurant stays open half day just for people who for some reason wouldn't have a thxgiving meal otherwise. They bring unsold food to a local soup kitchen at close.
I always considered that different than an optional shopping trip in a way.

(1,884 posts)Let the workers get something out of it also. Cash directly to them.

(111,277 posts)Tip jars on bars should also be heavy. Also tips to cab drivers.
Hospital staff can't take tips, but food is welcome.

(10,137 posts)and have been for all the decades I've been paying income taxes. Just because cash is harder to track doesn't mean it's non-taxable.
We now return you to the regularly scheduled rant...

(34,136 posts)But I may bake some cookies and give some to the people at the stations we stop at.
We have to drive two hours each way to get to the in laws. On the route we take over in the morning there are no rest stops so we usually stop at a gas station to use a restroom. On the way back it used to be we'd have to fill up the tank and there were only two stations open on the way out of town. Now with the Prius, we don't have to stop on the way home.

(38,002 posts)I was a waitron for many years. Working on holidays and weekends was a given. Not saying it's right but there are many jobs that don't fall into the standard weekdays-only format.
I would rather live in a country where people employed in the service industry were paid a living wage. It's no good staying home to celebrate a holiday with your family if you can't afford it.

(2,116 posts)draw the line. at the very least employees should be given the option of whether to work or not, with no negative consequences if they choose not to.

(38,002 posts)...be paid a bonus for doing so.
Mind you, most restaurants I worked at closed on T-Gives because there wasn't enough business worth staying open. Bonus for me because restaurant orphan-Thanksgivings are glorious.

(15,317 posts)Equating big box stores with restaurants is your first mistake. Claiming that those who are arguing that big box stores shouldn't be open are saying no one should have to work on Thanksgiving is another one. No one ever said that no one ever worked on Thanksgiving until Big Box stores came alone. Mistake number three.

(135,425 posts)The organizers consider the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day as a reminder of the democide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples. Participants in the National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. They want to educate Americans about history. The event was organized in a period of Native American activism and general cultural protests. The protest is organized by the United American Indians of New England (UAINE). Since it was first organized, social changes have resulted in major revisions to the portrayal of United States history, the government's and settlers' relations with Native American peoples, and renewed appreciation for Native American culture.
