Within a matter of weeks of the Syrian general making his plea for international help, the U.S., the Saudis, Jordan, Qatar, Turkey and Israel began providing weapons, training and money to so-called rebel groups like the Free Syrian Army, Swann said.[/i

(62,530 posts)once upon a time, there was a saying in Iraq after our invasion and the "peace" that followed, it went:
"first the little war, then the big war".
we are in the very early stages of the big war.
while we, the Russians, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon are doing whatever the hell we are doing over there, I'm waiting to see what the Chinese do.
after one of their folks was killed a couple of weeks ago by isis, they vowed to respond.
one day, I have this really queasy feeling, we will wake up and find that china has gone and done something so intense, that there will be no returning to any state of normalcy of any kind anywhere.
while we are now in a permanent state of continual war with, not only, no end in sight, but with no regard to an end in sight; the very real prospect of this turning into something truly epic on a hot war scale globally is very real.
but again we are at just the beginning. I would say the middle of the beginning.
if Turkey and Russia start trading blows, I would believe then that we will be at the end of the beginning and the long haul of stupidity will have begun.
I read a lot of history and I am always amazed at times in the past when there was a continual war; 30 year war, the 100 year war, etc.
Granted much of the time during those wars was spent arming and moving troops around.
Now, we can get virtual instantaneous arms and troops anywhere we want. Which means, more blood, less time for diplomacy and quicker turn over of the parties involved (which greatly increases the fog of war)
What would a 100 year war of hot fighting look like in our modern age?
Not pretty.
