violating its airspace - so how come they crashed in Syria. Russia says both pilots ejected.
This is very bad news.

(135,425 posts)You shoot a plane, and the pilot will try to get to where they have the best chance of reaching safety before they have to eject.

(62,444 posts)To "shoot down" an aircraft, one only need damage it enough that it will not be able to reach its destination.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Armstrong#Navy_service
Armstrong first saw action in the Korean War on August 29, 1951, as an escort for a photo reconnaissance plane over Songjin. Five days later on September 3, he flew armed reconnaissance over the primary transportation and storage facilities south of the village of Majon-ni, west of Wonsan. While making a low bombing run at about 350 mph (560 km/h), Armstrong's F9F Panther was hit by anti-aircraft fire. While trying to regain control, he collided with a pole at a height of about 20 feet (6 m), which sliced off about three feet (1 m) of the Panther's right wing. Armstrong flew the plane back to friendly territory, but due to the loss of the aileron, ejection was his only safe option. He planned to eject over water and await rescue by Navy helicopters, and therefore flew to an airfield near Pohang, but his ejection seat was blown back over land.

From the section Middle East
The Turkish military has reportedly shot down a Russian military aircraft on the border with Syria.
Russia's defence ministry said an Su-24 had crashed on Syrian territory after being hit by fire from the ground, and that its pilots had managed to eject. But Turkish military officials said Turkish F-16s had shot down the plane after repeatedly warning its pilots they were violating Turkish airspace.
Video footage showed the plane crashing into mountains in Latakia province. It is believed to have come down in a rebel-held area.

(101,321 posts)Hit a plane travelling at several hundred mph several thousand feet up, and it will go a few miles before hitting the ground.
Though the claim may be that it crossed into Turkish airspace, not necessarily that it was still there when shot, which won't make Turkey look good:

Graphic video purporting to show a dead Russian pilot is being widely circulated, but we cannot verify its authenticity.
BrookingsDoha analyst Charles Lister says the video shows the dead pilot wearing Russian uniform and equipment. He says the dead pilot is now reported to be in the hands of anti-Assad rebels from the Alwiya Al-Ashar group.

But for Russian pilots to again (allegedly) be somewhere they weren't supposed to after repeated warning is either gross negligence, or complete disregard for airspace restrictions...
