A peaceful demonstration for Jamar Clark and Black Lives Matter exploded into violence late Monday night in Minneapolis when suspected white supremacists opened fire on the protesters.

Early reports seemed to indicate that only two had been shot, but it appears that a total of 3-5 people have been shot, though reports do vary at this time. CBS Minnesota reports three total via direct communication from the police, but the AP states five along with many other protesters via Twitter.

Although there MAY have been a rise in violent crime after Ferguson (not confirmed), violent crime rates nationwide have been declining for the past generation.

And now we're paying real attention to crime on black people, which is causing some backlash. (BTW, no BLM people were killed or really seriously injured tonight.)

For stirring that backlash up, we should blame the GOP candidates who have been cynically equating BLM WITH INCREASED crime and attacks on police officers to whomp up anxiety among conservative voters. Chris Christie has been blaming Obama and BLM for attacks on police (including claims of "hunting" of police officers, which has not occurred). Also Cruz. And Trump wants to "give power back to the police because crime is rampant."

They'll find these shooters in all likelihood, and they'll go to jail, but the really big crimes are being committed by conservative leaders who should be sent home permanently by the voters.

I am not surprised this happened at some point, but I'm horrified, and i am surprised it doesn't seem to be a bigger news deal than it is. When BLM protestors annoy or inconvenience people, it gets more attention than when they're shot.
