and no other researcher knew about it until now. Was he in the process of verifying it when he became disabled or died? I would think most researchers would have colleagues (co-authors, other members of his department, graduate students) that he would have shared with in the even that something happened to him.

Even back then I would think any surviving fragment of that age would be a big deal.
