Democrat Defeats David Vitter in Louisiana Governor’s Race

With a victory that defied political geography and near universal predictions from just months earlier, a previously little-known Democrat, State Representative John Bel Edwards, defeated United States Senator David Vitter in a runoff election on Saturday to become the next governor of Louisiana.

The Associated Press named Mr. Edwards the winner as he was leading with 55 percent of the vote with a little over half of the ballots counted

Entering the governor’s race, Mr. Vitter, a Republican, was seen as the favorite. He had won two elections to the United States Senate, spent more than five years in the House and served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1992 to 1999. But a nasty primary fight left the Republican Party fractured and slow to unite behind Mr. Vitter, who was dragged down by a 2007 prostitution scandal and the deeply unpopular Republican incumbent, Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Mr. Edwards, a social conservative and a staunch critic of Mr. Jindal whose campaign was all but overlooked for months, came out of the nonpartisan primary in October with a commanding lead over Mr. Vitter. The two engaged in a bitter fight during the four-week campaign leading up to the runoff vote, with Mr. Edwards emphasizing personal differences and Mr. Vitter highlighting red meat issues like immigration and the Syrian refugee program. But though the race tightened it remained principally a referendum on Mr. Vitter rather than an ideological contest — terrain that favored Mr. Edwards.

"In a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 2008, and in a part of the country where Democratic governor campaigns are mostly suicide missions, a Republican was assumed to have an easy path to victory. Mr. Vitter was thought to be that Republican, given his overwhelming fund-raising advantage, unquestioned conservative reputation and proven skill at crushing challengers."

WOW!

and has destroyed higher education and health care. There are still a lot of old Ds who have switched to R out of political correctness who are alarmed at the direction the state has been going, and voted JBE. Plus Vitter was a fatally flawed candidate who finally had someone with backbone to challenge him.

And wouldn't that be just too bad? At the very least, it will make his run to retain his Senate seat next year a little more problematical. He might even get primaried, since he no longer looks invincible.

Oh, and powers that be in the national Democratic party? When we put candidates out there, sometimes we can win. Let's contest every seat, no matter how hopeless it looks going in.
