David Axelrod tweeted on this story:
As the son of a refugee, who came here seeking freedom from violence & persecution, I found this story so powerful:
NEW HAVEN The couple from Syria arrived at Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday only to face one more shock in a four-year journey of loss, anxiety and upheaval. They had no idea they had landed in a political maelstrom.
The governor of Indiana, the state that was scheduled to be their new home, had said he would not accept any more Syrian refugees for fear that they might be terrorists. Over the next two days, more than two dozen governors, a majority of the House of Representatives and all of the Republican presidential candidates said they would shut the door to people like them, because American security could not be guaranteed.
Why did they bring us if they didnt want us? said the 33-year-old husband and father, recalling his initial reaction through an Arabic interpreter. We are coming to an open country.
A country with freedoms, his wife, 23, said.
We felt rejected, her husband said. We were depressed. How could that be the freedoms that we hear about?

How dare he hate us for our freedoms and our 33,000 street gangs with 1.4 million members and our nearly 12,000 deaths due to gun violence?
In all seriousness, he really dodged a bullet by being rejected passage in Indiana. Places like Gary, Indiana with its 121 murders and 930 robberies between 2011 - 2013 is no walk in the park, in fact I wouldn't recommend it because you'll probably get robbed then there is Indianapolis Indiana which earned the rank of being one of the top ten places for MURDER.

(8,203 posts)who voted with the Republicans on the refugee screening bill. I heard he got something like 5000 phone calls in favor of the bill and only 50 against.
I know I didn't call because I never dreamed he'd side with the Republicans, with bigotry and fear.
