(13,570 posts)French Acadians from Canada were removed by the British and New England colonials in the French and Indian War given they were considered French-Army/Government sympathizers. Some were already in Maine and stayed (along with other French immigrants), some from Canada stayed in Maine, and many of course migrated to Lousiana, at that time a Spanish colony, and became the "Cajuns" (meaning Acadians, of course). Today both Maine and Louisiana have many French-speaking people. We are both also ocean states with coastal resorts and many of the same traditions of seafood, hunting, trapping, etc. Amazing how many similarities two places so far apart can have.
