Does anyone ever check out Discussionist just for the comedy relief?

An occasional quick look in probably shouldn't cost anyone too many brain cells. I've been hanging out there recently, and it's ridiculously easy to get over on them. The poor dumb bastards are so desperate for validation, that all it took was a simple "Obama is the worst President ever" post, and I obtained instant acceptance and credibility.
A few of the jackasses worth checking out:

Konservatve (with a K, extremely clever, eh?): This assclown is a know-nothing blowhard whose every post consists of "How come liberals always: … followed by some imaginary straw-man pulled straight out of his flabby ass. He also loves to point out that in previous centuries Democrats were the party of racism, but will not acknowledge that it all began to change in the mid to late 20th century. He then goes on to dismiss any mention of the Chimp as yesterday's news. Not a particularly self-aware little critter.

joefriday6: This cat may actually be a danger to himself. He believes that Paris was a false flag operation, but it doesn't matter to him because he's going to be raptured momentarily.

Dexter Morgan: A punk (I'm guessing maybe 13 years old or so) who thinks that a serial killer user name and a Confederate flag avatar make him edgy. The goofy little shit also can't complete a post without the ROFL smilie. He appears to believe that it actually makes for a show-stopping argument winner.

sassyspop: A fave. He can't engage in a discussion without explaining how much smarter and better-educated he is than those with whom he disagrees. It's particularly amusing to watch him declare victory and run away after getting his rhetorical ass handed to him. The Dunning-Kruger poster boy.

jennyfromdablock: Discussionist's counterpart to Miss Teen South Carolina. Imagine a somewhat less coherent Sarah Palin, but lacking the charm also too.

Laughing Gull: One of the more uninformed, yet still remarkably verbose posters. Thinks the Gaza strip is a nude bar, but is still pretty sure he knows better than President Obama how to handle things in the Middle East.

Banshee3Actual: The cut and paste champion of the internet. Actually knows a little bit about military history, but if he ever had an original thought it would die of loneliness. Claims to have served on active duty, but his comments directed toward the Commander-in-Chief lend one to believe that the only thing he knows about the UCMJ comes straight from Google.

There are more, but see for yourself. Hurry, though, because after a Democrat assumes the White House in 2017 the pitiful little group of lost souls is likely to implode.

We have many of their cousins right here. This general discussion forum everyday has posts from crazy conservative publishing sites posted as "news," I was told when I protested in a comment about one such post. Today there is a lie of a post from PJ media and a post with three WSJ links, presented as fact based information, not posted for jest or ridicule.

Then the stench of Nixon's Ghost, with his pompous Anarcho-capitalist horseshit, his MRAssholiness and his revisionist stupidity of likening Hitler as a lefty pretty much rendered that site a pathetic comedy act for me.

I think the creators envisioned a reasonable debate between DUers and Eisenhower conservatives.

They got Randians, Austrian School crackpots, circular-argument-tossing libertarians and troglodytes who crawled out of a sewer instead. WAAAAAAAY too many cranks over there for that site to be taken seriously. To me, there's nothing more comedic than a Dunning-Krugertarian.

Many of the observations Konservative makes about liberal hypocrisy are painfully accurate. I don't agree with his political philosophy but I've had at least one conversation with him in which he took interest in what I consider to the be the roots of left wing ideology.

He was extremely polite. Warm and friendly, in fact.

Here, I feel like I ave to walk on eggshells because some of my rather militant far-left positions can get me in trouble with a few of the cliques here...and I'm also a gun owner (i.e., a pariah to some). Less fear of witch hunts on DI...

And yes, I've had good conversations with conservatives there. Some of them are cartoonish trolls, to be sure...but many aren't. Some that can be trolls will engage rationally if you make the first overture (like Konservative). DI sucks sometimes...but I'm not sure it ever sucks as much as DG .

Someone over on DI actually made a good name for it - "The Endless Game Without Any Rules".

I do WAY more serious posting over there, it's much more challenging and interesting to have to explain your position properly to people than just sit there megaphoning among a crowd of (supposedly) like-minded peers.

I'm a fan of DI. I think it's a lot nicer.

A lot of the time the conservatives over there have never really been exposed to any liberals willing to make their points consistently and courteously. Also there are no cliques over there at all, as far as I can see. I see a poster snorting derisively at someone in one thread and then enthusiastically supporting their position in another. In some ways, bizarrely, it's much more adult. Even if the ideas under discussion aren't always well explained, there is at least a feeling that an attempt to make such an explanation is genuinely valued, not so much here. There are a whole bunch of trollish types on both sides, but they don't seem to have the same power over the collective understanding of the purpose of the site that they do here. Here everyone's so connected that a splash sends ripples for months.

I had an enormous argument with a guy there called Slayer about whether a spade was a shovel or vice versa. we were amazingly rude! Really! And then we became pals over the ridiculousness of it!!!! lol I think that's awsome!

DU is regarded almost universally by the DI membership as ridiculous, and very often I find it hard to disagree with the things they say about DU. We're terribly self-absorbed around these here parts.

It's embarrassing (and more than a little heartbreaking) how we're eating our own in that sewer of a forum...

Excellent observation about a key difference between the two boards:

"here are a whole bunch of trollish types on both sides, but they don't seem to have the same power over the collective understanding of the purpose of the site that they do here. Here everyone's so connected that a splash sends ripples for months."

At DI, disagreement is expected, and when it's conducted in a vaguely civil manner, there's an acceptance of the other side as people with a right to be part of the debate. There are a fair few number of folk here at DU that behave is of those who disagree with them are categorically wrong, as if they somehow have the right to determine ideological purity. It's bloody annoying...

65. Yes, there is *considerable value* in creating a space for the interlocutor
Fri Nov 20, 2015, 04:49 PM
Nov 2015

to be wrong without there being something "wrong" with them. If you don't create that space, you're in trouble because people put time and effort into these boards and get disheartened if they feel their identity is constantly under threat.

You end up winnowing out all the thoughtful people and leave only people with skin so thick you could thrash them with steel rods. People like that are typically a little bit.... um.... set in their ways.

Having said all that, I myself have been oustandingly rude here in a way that I wouldn't dream of indulging myself in over there. I don't think people really care, here, over there, everyone would think I was just being ridiculously childish and would say so.

I'd like to think the miscreants I've directed my ire at over the past in DU richly deserved it, and perhaps they did, but, really, I don't HAVE to do it. DU has this weird problem of everybody demanding that everyone else has skins the thickness of a T-Rex while maintaining their own right to be made of porcelain. MY offense is MINE TO TAKE, YOURS is WEAKNESS. And I think it's EVERYONE doing it. Well, all the top posters, anyway.

I do it myself. I've had enough of it, really. I had to leave recently after posting something so outrageous I pretty much expected to be banned.

Which isn't to say I have any more time, now, for the targets on DU of my own special brand of petulance. I just don't think they're worth it anymore.
