UC Santa Cruz student warned to abstain from BDS vote over ‘Jewish agenda’

A Jewish member of the student government at University of California, Santa Cruz was warned to “abstain” from voting on a pro-BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement) resolution because he is the president of the school's Jewish Student Union and was “elected with a Jewish agenda.”

The incident occurred prior to a vote by the UCSC student council to annul a veto an earlier Israel divestment bill. On Nov. 17, the UCSC voted 28 in favor and five against, with seven abstaining, to reinstate a divestment resolution that was vetoed in 2014.

In a text message sent to UC Santa Cruz Jewish Student Union (JSU) President Daniel Bernstein, the sender wrote, “You will be abstaining, as the president of JSU that is the right thing.”

I wonder if all the Muslim students also got a text saying they shouldn't vote. I'm guessing no. Anti-Zionism is bad enough at colleges these days. The anti-semitism is totally out of hand.

First, to suggest a final solution against Jews is in the works in Israel/Palestine is so gobsmackingly stupid and upside-down on the relative power relationships there it makes my head hurt.

Second, the hallmark of the Holocaust was the mobilization of state resources to engage in the systematic genocide of an ethnicity. Random stabbings by bigots from another ethnic minority fall several magnitudes short of that.

it's not about Zionist or not. This guy is Jewish, they say he had a Jewish agenda. And if you are Jewish, there is only one opinion that the BDSers on campus will allow you to express. It is a conscious tactic of theirs to harass Jews so that Jews will stop supporting Israel. This is far different than making arguments. This is thuggery. Then when pro-Israel voices are silenced, the uninformed 90% will hear all of the anti-Israel voices etc. One reason this tactic works is that adherents of the other major religions each outnumber Jews by a factor of 100 to 1. It baffles me that progressives approve of this tactic.

At the same time, LOL at the pro-Israel folks complaining about academic freedom.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/07/nyregion/bloomberg-defends-brooklyn-colleges-right-to-bds-talk.html?_r=0

Mr. Bloomberg said he “couldn’t disagree more violently” with the movement, known as B.D.S., for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. But he said a university should be free to sponsor a forum on any topic, “including ideas that people find repugnant.”

“If you want to go to a university where the government decides what kind of subjects are fit for discussion, I suggest you apply to a school in North Korea,” he said in a news conference at City Hall.

The comments were Mr. Bloomberg’s first on a debate that has pitted the school against some New York City and state legislators, the Anti-Defamation League and prominent alumni like Alan Dershowitz.

The Brooklyn College event, scheduled to take place on Thursday, is being co-sponsored by the college’s political science department, as well as several student and nonstudent groups, and will feature two speakers from the B.D.S. movement, Judith Butler, a philosopher, and Omar Barghouti, a founding member of the group.

Ten members of the City Council, led by Lewis A. Fidler of Brooklyn, signed a letter on Jan. 29 to the college president, Karen Gould, demanding either that the event be canceled or that the university revoke its sponsorship. (Two of the members later backed off their support of the letter.) The letter also suggested that if the university went ahead with the event, the Council might withhold future financing to the school. Mr. Bloomberg rejected that threat.

http://www.thenation.com/article/steven-salaita-professor-fired-for-uncivil-tweets-vindicated-in-federal-court/

Despite the initial show of support, however, the University soon changed its tune. Letters and emails obtained via Illinois’ Freedom of Information Act revealed that students, alumni, and donors wrote to the University’s Chancellor, Phyllis Wise (“Wise”), to voice their concerns over Dr. Salaita joining the University. One writer in particular claimed to be a “multiple 6 figure donor” who would be ceasing support of the University because of Dr. Salaita and his tweets.

Two other specific interactions are critical to Dr. Salaita’s Complaint. The first involves an unknown donor who met with Chancellor Wise and provided her a two-page memo about the situation. Wise ultimately destroyed the memo, but an email Wise sent University officials summarized it as follows: “He [the unknown donor] gave me [Chancellor Wise] a two-pager filled with information on Professor Salaita and said how we handle the situation will be very telling.” The second interaction involves a particularly wealthy donor who asked to meet with Chancellor Wise to “share his thoughts about the University’s hiring of Professor Salaita.”

Plenty more where that came from.

in ways like this it is influencing Americans' daily lives even when it isn't in the form of violent jihad, but rather academic jihad. Sadly, elements of the extreme-left are co-opting it because it fits an "anti-imperial colonial agenda."

And the Democratic Party needs to start taking on the anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. It's small among party members but has been growing enough to be on peoples' radars. The Party cannot take the Jewish vote for granted: Obama lost 10% of his Jewish vote from 2008 to 2012. Jews have been one of the most loyal groups to the Democratic party, some of the fiercest advocates for progressive causes (civil rights in particular), and some of the most generous donors. While not a big percent of people nation wide, this country is a. one of the few with more Jews than Muslims, and b. there are a lot of Jews in swing states, and c. Americans in general support Israel over Palestinians by a gulf-sized margin. That Gaza episode from the 2012 convention can never fucking happen again. Ever.

in my own family. They didn't vote for Romney, they just skipped the race. Nothing I said (and believe me, I defended the President strongly), made a dent. I ran into the same thing recently in Israel - from those on the Israeli left as well as the right - they simply think Pres Obama has tried so hard to be "fair" that he ignores far too much violence perpetrated by the Palestinians. But the Israeli's love Hillary and are good with Bernie also - they just don't like the President. But you're right - another episode like that in 2012 is not something the Democrats can let happen again - and as your poll clearly shows - there is little stomach for supporting those who vote terrorist organizations into elected offices.
