ASHINGTON, D.C. - Northeast Ohio Democrats Tim Ryan and Marcy Kaptur were among 47 Democrats who joined with the majority of House Republicans on Thursday to pass a controversial bill that would increase government background checks done before Syrian or Iraqi refugees are admitted to the United States.
All Ohio's Republicans backed the bill, which passed by a veto-proof vote of 289 to 137.
The White House issued a statement that said President Obama will attempt to veto the bill if it comes to his desk because refugees from all countries already "undergo the most rigorous and thorough security screening of anyone admitted into the United States."
"This legislation would introduce unnecessary and impractical requirements that would unacceptably hamper our efforts to assist some of the most vulnerable people in the world, many of whom are victims of terrorism, and would undermine our partners in the Middle East and Europe in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis," the statement said.
