(20,176 posts)Billy Corgan is a wonderful human being...or something approximating a human being. He just has really awful social skills and seems to enjoy being an life-troll.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,182 posts)And Billy Corgan is without a doubt a musical genius with his ability to play guitar and write lyrics. (His voice is what one calls an "acquired taste" but once you do manage to acquire it, you appreciate that, too.)
So whether he's just a tortured, misunderstood genius or a general douchebag, I couldn't care less. The guy is simply brilliant when it comes to awesome music.

(65,076 posts)Billy was never(!) even the best guitar player in his own band. I know those guys personally as the drummer's first band was my band when he was around 15 and i was 19. Jimmy had enormous chops even as a kid!

(43,182 posts)I never knew that. I also thought he stayed strictly to drums, of which he was quite awesome at playing.

(65,076 posts)By a lot.
Jimmy C "played with" a guitar but he was best suited to the drums where he did, indeed, have a tremendous gift. His brother Jeff was a good drummer too.
On Edit: I was thinking of the lead player in Jim's brother's band. Jim's brother was named Mike.

(9,116 posts)The Pixies, now there's a band I can get behind.

(9,116 posts)Generally, I appreciate the Pumpkins' music. Their blending of goth rock, alternative, industrial, and heavy metal definitely made for some eclectic tunes. I'd take them over the post-grunge shit that seemed to permeate the market those days any day of the week.
But I don't forgive the man unconditionally. Mostly because I'm a Nine Inch Nails fan, and NIN beats the shit out of SP all day long and twice on Sundays

(43,182 posts)One that I insist on listening to from beginning to end without missing a single note because it's just that good of an album.
To me, the Pumpkins have aged somewhat better than NIN in terms of my own tastes, but I'll gladly take Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral or The Fragile as kick-ass mood music.
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)I don't identify with the angsty lyrics of the early work quite as much, but the layering of Trent Reznor's compositions is so dense that even today, a decade and a half after I started seriously following his music, I'm still discovering new sounds tucked between the notes.
I do think the NIN brand has grown a little stale since The Fragile, though. But Trent's soundtrack collaborations with David Fincher have been nothing short of brilliant.

(26,117 posts)It was with great pride and enthusiasm that I took on management of the Pumpkins back in October, Osbourne wrote, but unfortunately I must resign today due to medical reasons Billy Corgan was making me sick.

(4,461 posts)... I had no idea he was a right winger or a libertarian.
For the record, I don't think he was poking fun at racism. I think he was poking fun at dicks, and racism was the topic he chose. Now, maybe that means something (knowing what I've learned today), but I had no idea when I posted it.
