I heard George Clooney say this years ago and always thought it was interesting.

The Salem Witch hysteria
Conservative types screamed "They're witches!! BURN THEM!!"

Moderate types said "Well some of them may be witches so we might want to burn a few"

Liberal types said "There's no proof that they're witches"
