We call him Pious Pete.
Please contact our governor and explain to him the need to take a strong stand against importing Syrians into Alaska. I will not call them refugees - they are not. Europe is under invasion and Paris is the first city to fall under full attack. We in the US are next and the Quisling who has opened wide our gates to the invading horde is our very own president.
Governor Walker: Obviously, we cannot rely on Obama to defend this country, but you governor, are the leader of this state. It has fallen to you to do the uncomfortable. Contact the president. Tell him it is unacceptable to transplant the invaders of Europe to our country.
No amount of romanticizing will turn these people into "huddled masses yearning to be free." They are the vanguard of sharia law and they are dangerous. In an interview you said you hadn't given the idea of standing against the transplant much thought. That's OK. Things are moving quickly and who would have thought a US president would put you in this position. But now you know. Get your bearings and make a stand.
There's something really unseemly and disturbing about his use of the word "quisling," - a traitor who collaborates with an enemy force occupying their country. He's obviously pretty upset with our governor who has said he won't oppose Syrian refugees coming to America.
The only upside is that he's being trounced in the comments.

(46,436 posts)but he is the one who has used state funds to put pregnancy tests in the bars in an effort to keep women from drinking if they might be pregnant. He's also virulently anti-abortion and basically just a general dick. (Can I say that without being sexist?). Of course, he also wants vouchers for religious schools and whatnot, too. He's a real piece of work.

I'm glad to hear he's being trounced in the comments. He deserves no less.

Sweden is also a welcoming country and easy to get to. It's about distance and ease of entry not weather.
The Alaska politicitan is just doing the old GOP refusal to anything Obama

(46,436 posts)one of the worst in our state's rogue's gallery of awful legislators. They have this place so gerrymandered, it's a wonder we've got any Dems at all in our legislature. The ones we DO have are really outstanding, but they're so outnumbered, it's pathetic.

(46,436 posts)I'M Alaska, and I don't intend to shut up. There are several other good Alaskans here at DU who I suspect will also not shut up. Do you think Alaska is unique for having produced idiotic politicians like Sarah Palin and Pete Kelly? I don't think so.
I know you're new, but there's no need to tell people (or states) to shut up.

(3,263 posts)Gov. Of Illinois was one of the first to join the no to refugees states so no these creeps are not unique to AK , and Illinois has had plenty of idiots too. Just look at who got elected governor!

(46,436 posts)in the face of so much right-wing opposition here. On the other hand, he is getting a lot of support from the more sane among us, so I hope he continues to stick with his principles. As a Republican turned Independent, he has already faced serious hostility from his former party-mates. They were already pissed at him for taking executive action to expand Medicaid.

(31,395 posts)There are idiot right wing politicians everywhere--I'm surrounded in NC by them since I live
in the Dem oasis of Chapel Hill--and it's one of the reasons we need a place like
DU to share our frustration and vent once in a while.
An apology to Blue is in order, CJC. Welcome to DU.

Only one word needed here Rauner

(65,078 posts)You used the "R" word. We don't mention the governor by name in our house. Maybe in a fit of road rage i might yell "You Rauner!" at someone. But, then my wife will yell at me for using such dirty language.

(46,436 posts)In fact, he has correctly stated that it's not a matter that governors get to decide and that the refugees Alaska has accepted from other countries have enriched us as a state. I don't agree with him on everything, but he's a good and kind man.

(46,436 posts)I had to look up the exact meaning. I knew it was derogatory and inflammatory, but I didn't realize just how much until I got the definition. And then that he would use a capital Q made it even worse. I hope people in his district in Fairbanks get in touch with their better angels the next time elections roll around.

(45,319 posts)in housing, it is also one of the most dangerous States for us in terms of violent bias crimes. There is almost a perfect cross over, the anti gay States and the States that are afraid of refugees.

(46,436 posts)but we are making some progress on that front. Anchorage just recently passed an LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinance a couple months ago and last year elected a progressive Democratic mayor. http://www.metroweekly.com/2015/10/anchorage-passes-nondiscrimination-ordinance/
I have heard of some of the smaller towns also passing such ordinances. Don't write us off yet - before oil and the influx of Southern oil men, this was one of the most progressive states in the union. This may be mean of me, but I'm hoping with the oil crash up here, a lot of those people will go back where they came from.

(2,679 posts)The crazy thing is when I watch these programs I tend to think the repubs resemble the Nazi's more so then any other party not just in the States but abroad as well. I also tend to think many of the shows on channels like American Hero's Channel and the History Channel that deal with the late 1800's early 1900 and the struggle between labor and super rich people (Carnegie, Rockefeller, ect..), closely resemble our current economic troubles. No unions, low wages, crappy jobs, for most people and a few very rich people that control everything.
Just saying ....
