In the face of intolerance
Jay Inslee
Dear Michael --
Our hearts are heavy this week as we think of the lives lost to the barbaric acts committed in Paris and Beirut last week.
Our response as a state to these tragic events cannot be to cower to fear and division. Washington will continue to be a state that welcomes those seeking refuge from terror, war, and persecution, regardless of where they are from and which religion they practice.
More than half the nation's governors say its time to close our doors to Syrian refugees, whose lives are in peril. I say its never been more important to stand for our Washington state values of compassion and inclusion. After the U.S. State Department robustly screens and evaluates families who seek refugee status, Washington will continue to be a state that welcomes those seeking refuge.
These are our values. This is what I stand for, and this is what Washington stands for.

(2,543 posts)I will never EVER forgive him for siding with Boeing against the machinists' union AND giving that huge tax giveaway to Boeing which in theory was supposed to keep the jobs in Washington State. And where have Boeing jobs been going since they got that plum tax break? You got it -- right to work states like South Carolina.
Boeing took money from the taxpayers of Washington State under false pretenses. But nothing will ever be done about it because BUSINESS!
That said he is right about the refugees.

(72,790 posts)That being said, I want Malloy to say NO to the refugees. I have no issue with the color of their skin or religion, I would just rather we take care of folks already living in our state/country before we try to help others. The USA can no longer try to save the world when it's done such a poor job of trying to save itself.

The USA is not trying to save the world, it spends more than half of the budget on warfare and selling arms and it doesn't give a shit about the common man except for cannon fodder.
fuck war.

Steer clear of Seattle though - liberal but too expensive.

By Emma Lazarus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.r
Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she
With silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

(1,325 posts)Here in Texas, our governor wrote a letter to the President tellin' him why folks down here ain't gonna take no refugees. One Congress critter chimed in that guns are too easy to git, and Seeriuns might start arming themselves if they made it to the great state. Louie the turd Gomer was on the Fox claiming that all Islamic people are suspect. Simple ideas from a simple mind for simple people to digest. Keerist on a crutch, but we do breed 'em stoopid in Texas.

(58,785 posts)on this topic, it's very nice to read what's happening in Washington. Our governors are Rick Scott and Nathan Deal, so statments of principle lived up to have to come from elsewhere.
You know, that kind of conservative undoubtedly worked physically as hard as any other groups to build this country, but, nevertheless, what is great about it is great in spite of them.

(1,508 posts)too bad the governor of my state, who by the way happens to be running for President....John Kasich, could not do the same. Coward that he is, ex Lehman brothers employee that he was, I expect nothing more from him. I hope Governor Inslee will continue to make you proud in the future.

(1,508 posts)Tierra_y_Libertad it made my day also even though I am not from Washington, and he is not my governor. I applaud anyone who is keeping their wits about them #1 and remembering the fact that we are all immigrants to the land if we are not Native Americans, and we must remember that our motto has always been:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

(1,508 posts)lead me to believe you might be an immigrant or the son or daughter of an immigrant. My father spoke those words many times during his lifetime. I remember him saying to my mother a number of times, all we need is land and freedom and we can make it from there. Brings back good memories.
