Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz struck conservative gold in Iowa.

Cruz won the backing Monday of U.S. Rep. Steve King, an influential western Iowa Republican with strong support within the state’s powerful religious right community and the Tea Party wing.

King praised Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas, as having an “unmatched intellect” that is grounded in constitutionalism, American exceptionalism and rule of law.

“I believe Ted Cruz is the candidate who is the answer to my prayers, a candidate whom God will use to restore the soul of America,” King said in a press release.
