Two University of Nebraska-Lincoln students living in Paris knew something was terribly wrong Friday night when they heard gunfire and saw people hurrying from the area near their apartment.
Clinton Bartek, 23, of Falls City, and his fiancée, Madeline Shomos, 24, of Lincoln, were walking along a canal enjoying the evening when they heard what sounded like machine gunfire. They went to their apartment near Place de la République and began searching for information.
The area was heavily hit with gunfire, Bartek said Sunday via Skype. The shots were very, very close. Then we saw people walking pretty swiftly away and looking at their phones.
The Nebraskans watched the news and learned that three teams of terrorists staged coordinated attacks at six locations throughout Paris, including a concert hall, the Stade de France and at least two restaurants. At least 129 people were killed and 352 wounded in the attacks that included suicide bombers.
