Burt Reynolds: If you met me in 1978, Im really sorry
.... In his memoir, Reynolds talks about the short-lived United States Football League, a spring-summer league that kicked off in 1983.
Trump owned the leagues New Jersey Generals, and Reynolds was part-owner of the Tampa Bay Bandits. ....
He says Trump alone wanted to compete directly with the NFL in the fall, which the other owners and officials saw as unrealistic.
Trump, Reynolds believes, was angling for a merger with the NFL so he could wind up with an NFL franchise for a song.
(Trumps) personal ambition sank the USFL, he says.
I pray he never gets the chance to do to the USA what he did to the USFL.

(182,879 posts)The majority owner of the Bandits was very ill (cancer?) and was seen as the only formidable opponent of Trump amongst the owners. He did not have the energy to fight Trump on it.
What is also telling is that the NFL owners were never going to allow Trump a franchise. NFL teams themselves are can't miss investments. The NFL owners didn't want Trump's blowhard personality associated with "the shield" and they knew he was a horrible manager of assets that weren't the NEWEST BIGGEST BEST thing.

PS: Thanks, UTUSN! If you knew me then or if you didn't: I'm sorry, too, for what I was like in 1978.

(14,133 posts)They should be paying something from all that profit while making cities use tax money for huge stadiums that only get used about 9 times a year.
