It's not as though he almost won in 2012 or was an exceptionally strong campaigner. He was beaten pretty handily by President Obama and had a good number of flubs, 47% being the most notorious of them.
He's not exactly the Great Republican Hope. And it's not like the bulk of GOP voters are clamoring all over themselves hoping he'll run. There were pretty much bored of him in 2012 and ended up voting for him only because his name wasn't Barack Obama.
I think the GOP Establishment has their guy, and it's Rubio (since Jeb imploded). He's bendable, pliable, generically good looking, neither overly dumb nor too smart for the GOP's own good, gives an ethnic bend to the race, and most importantly will do and say anything they and their donors want him to do and say. They just have to wait for Crazy Thing A and Crazy Thing B to fade in the polls, and then fend off an advance from Cruz (who will benefit most from Crazy Thing A and Crazy Thing B's current legion of followers).
Why exactly is Romney still in the conversation? Am I missing something?
Or are the Republicans actually that stupid?

(43,219 posts)But it's not like Romney would really perform anything better or bring anything new to the race. In fact, all he'd really bring is old.

I had to stop what I was doing, rewind the dvr and make sure this was a paid for rightwing shill liar, and it was, otherwise I was gonna throw something at my TV...
Great man my ass...he made his fortune destroying jobs.
He is a corrupt piece of shit who mocked and taunted and beat up a helpless Gay boy in school.
Helpless because this GREAT MAN had friends with him to do it.
FUCK YOU you piece of shit

(11,619 posts)They know that their leading candidates are unelectable.
With Jeb the Builder (Can we fix it?) failing, and his protégé, Rubio, floundering, they are worried that there will be no one to appeal to the center in what should have been the Republican's victory march to total control.

(43,219 posts)Not generally stupid.
Nominee retreads rarely work. Nixon was an exception to the general rule. Usually, a candidate will take one shot at the nomination and if he fails, that's pretty much all she wrote.

(32,736 posts)someone ask Cruz and Rubio about immigration being the same for Cubans as it is for everyone else.

(250 posts)My guess is that a certain small percentage of educated, well-off Republicans is currently fantasizing that Romney returns and saves them from the embarrassment of a Carson or Trump victory or a possible brokered convention.
It's a nice story, so some voices in the media have run with it.
The reality is that the Republican party is stuck with the two embarrassingly least-equipped primary frontrunners of my lifetime, and a number three guy mostly noted for being hated by almost every nationally elected member of his own party.
It would be hilarious, EXCEPT for the fact that they might possibly win.
