Donald Trump Still A Big Fan Of Operation Wetback'
Donald Trump said again Tuesday that mass deportation is possible -- just look at President Dwight D. Eisenhowers 1954 mass deportation program "Operation Wetback."
The program, named after an offensive racial slur, deported an estimated 1.3 million people. That's less than a tenth of how many undocumented immigrants are in the country today, many of them with longstanding ties to the U.S.
"Move them way south, they never came back," Trump said. "Dwight Eisenhower. You don't get nicer, you don't get friendlier, they moved a million and a half people out. We have no choice. We have no choice."
But Operation Wetback had many problems, some of which would also be true of Trump's plan to deport or drive out every undocumented immigrant. It led to the deportation of U.S. citizens, just like Trump's proposal would, since it called for children of undocumented immigrants to be forced out of the U.S. with their parents.
Two of Trump's opponents, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, said mass deportation was unrealistic.
