The things most likely to kill you in one infographic

Humans are notoriously bad at assessing risk. It's why someone lights up another cigarette while worrying about getting killed by a terrorist, and why so many of us calmly drive to work everyday but feel nervous getting on a plane.

To help people make sense of all this, the UK's National Health Service put together the Atlas of Risk, which we first saw tweeted by Duke University physician Peter Ubel.

Here are the leading causes of death in the UK, with larger circles representing more common causes:

I know it is for the UK but I still found it interesting.

I would have guessed that crashes (car, motorcycle, bike, etc) would outweigh the others - which I assume to be falls and the like.

A simple fall can be fatal to an elderly person, bringing on complications that they never recover from.

They're representing one-dimensional numbers in two dimensions, making big things look smaller and small ones bigger, to get it all onto one chart.

On the back of an envelope, I'd expect the "Heart and cardiovascular" circle to be about 200-300 times larger than the "murder" circle, give or take

In America, "Transport Accidents" are going to be higher, and our Murder Rate is undoubtedly higher as well.

We have hundreds of times more cars, and thousands of times more firearms.

"100s" and "1000s", but I stand corrected.

let's just say their homicide rate is 1/5th of ours then.
