As Illinois refuses to pay its bills, city shuts off water at an I-70 rest stop

With each passing day the budget standoff in Illinois continues to affect Wabash Valley communities.

This as several Illinois Department of Transportation facilities are behind on utility payments. The city of Marshall recently gave the state an ultimatum pay up or its lights out.

The city owns and operates its water and electricity. IDOT is more than $15,000 behind for facilities that include a rest stop along I-70 and a transportation garage in the county.

As of 1:00 p.m. on Monday water has been shut off at the Cumberland rest stop. “They very well knew what was coming,” said Mayor Camie Sanders during an afternoon press conference.
