I never remember seeing two people with their Sony Walkmans plugged in, not talking to each other at a restaurant. People didn't tend to carry portable televisions around to look down at while they walked. Newspapers, books and magazines were always put down at some point.

I know it's a cartoon, but the big difference is that cellphones let people be engaged without really being engaged. I can be all snarky on FB/Twitter/Insta/Whateva... and then refresh and refresh and refresh for responses.

We had a blast. It was a noisy NYC place with a doomed couple sitting next to us.

Texting isn't all bad.

Everyone at the table puts their cell phone in a pile. First person to reach for their phone pays the tab.

Not the same. This was not an indictment against you, by the way. it's a comment on that cartoon being off on equating cellphones with the other things... which were always put away at some point for honest interaction. With your cellphone, you don't need that interaction in the real world today. Not just kids. Adults are far worse. My son barely uses his phone at 17. I use mine far more. Thanks for helping to underline that.

entering. Pity more adults don't when they are out with real live in-the-flesh friends. You're fighting over something that's kind of silly here. Did you draw the cartoon?

when I seem to be enjoying a child in a waiting room more than his own mother, who is glued to her handheld and completely oblivious to his reactions to the new toys, something is NOT RIGHT

The youth today are so attached to their cell phones they are losing their social skills. At work, I have to create a rule for meetings that no cell phones are allowed. IF I did not, they would ignore the meeting and sit there and text away.
