(Bloomberg) SeaWorld Entertainment Inc., the theme-park operator under fire from animal activists, will convert its killer whale shows in San Diego to put the animals in a more natural setting and emphasize conservation instead of tricks, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The newspaper cited documents posted online for an investor day presentation set for Monday by Orlando, Florida-based SeaWorld. The company didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.
SeaWorld is contending with negative publicity about its signature attraction following the 2013 release Blackfish, a documentary thats critical of its orca care. Last month, the California Coastal Commission approved a $100 million expansion of the companys San Diego killer whale tank, under the condition that the company stop breeding the whales there. As the killer whales cannot survive on their own in the wild, they will have to be euthanized.
It's OK, I'm an activist so whatever I say or do is done with compassion.

(2,061 posts)While others know there is only one solution and are willing to have someone or something (as long as it's not me) lay it on the line to prove it.
My solution is infinitely better than keeping SeaWorld open, all educated people agree on that.
Save the Whales, but shoot those Seals.

(1,712 posts)Really? SeaWorld does a good thing, but it's more important to keep pretending it's all just "putting on lipstick?" It's more important to have a villain (real or manufactured) for faux animal rights activists to fight, than it is to acknowledge that they can have a very productive role to play and they're slowly heading in that direction?
