Florida Man Gets Year in Jail For Running over Baby Ducks with a Lawn Mower

Florida Man Gets Year in Jail For Running over Baby Ducks with a Lawn Mower
By Lydia Price | 07/27/2015 AT 02:00 PM EDT

Do not hire this man to mow your lawn.

John Scott Falbo II, 24, who used to work for a landscaping company, intentionally ran over nine ducklings on May 2 in Wellington, Florida.

On Thursday, Falbo was sentenced to a year in Palm Beach County Jail and three years probation for both the duck massacre and separate charges of domestic battery. Falbo was ordered to complete 10 hours of community service every month after he is released from jail and receives a mental health evaluation. Falbo will also be prohibited from owning any animals.

"They were in my path so I just kept mowing," Falbo said, according to the police report.

I am not sure what to make of the length of the sentence.

People who do this are most likely abusive to other people, they tend to see everything and everyone as something to use and or abuse or eliminate if it gets in their way. They do it even if that "thing" is a sentient being.

Unfortunately, mental healthcare in Florida is a joke which is part of the reason for so many stories like this there. He'll probably leave jail a worse person only to return later for a worse offense.

I personally do think the sentence is light. My knee jerk reaction is to punish this person very harshly. Unfortunately that is how most our system is everyone gets punished very harshly for even the smallest thing starting at a very young age. So we have a punishment model for our justice system and it does not work. We really should be thinking fix and reform for things like this. We are never going to give animal abusers a life sentence and that wouldn't be appropriate anyway. I think over a years worth of residential therapy would be a better solution than a year in jail he is very very likely to come out worse like you say.

Seriously, I probably would never have thought of it again otherwise...
I remember my brother was mowing the lawn on a riding lawn mower (he was probably 12 at the time) and a squirrel ran out in front of him. He didn't notice it and ran it over. Little bits of squirrel fur came out of a lawn mower.

Nine ducks sounds intentional and not an accident, but I bet the guy's lengthy sentence is mostly because of the domestic battery.

I hope it doesn't make you terrible sad, my dad accidentally killed a kitten once. Not with a lawnmower, but with his car the kitten had crawled up in the engine. I cried almost all day. So anyway stories like this poor critters always get me a little bit.

because I was probably 17 at the time. Maybe I would have been if I was a little kid at the time. I knew it was an accident that couldn't be avoided and things like that happen to little animals sometimes.
