Kansas City shuts down - 500,000 people attend city wide party for World Champion Royals

What a great day for this city and the KC Royals. Schools are out today, many offices shut down today, the entire city is having one big joyous celebration to celebrate the World Series Champion Royals. I've never seen the city come together like this, it's just amazing.

why do people always seem to assume that the KC area is small? there's also actually 3 KCs. two in missouri and one in kansas.

kansas city, mo proper has about 500,000 people. that's actually more than st. louis proper. the entire KC metropolitan area has about 2.5 million people, which is smaller than the st louis metro, but not by that much. kansas city, ks is much smaller, about 150,000 people. there's also the city of north kansas city, mo but it's population is only about 5,000.

i live in overland park which is a suburb on the kansas side. OP has a population of about 150,000.

Then again, as you may recall from last year , SF regularly draws over 1 million after an "Orange October", despite having only 800,000 within the 49-square-mile kingdom.

They won the World Series and no one burned down the city, unlike many other cities who won championships. They used it to bring the City together.

Gotta Love KC!

Or last year, when they lost.

The city ain't perfect - the weather sucks, and is the main reason I left - but it's not the worst place in the world.

Plus ice storms, floods, snow ... In California, people have no idea what an ice storm is, and I like that.

wouldn't trade it for the world! I can deal with a little inconvenience once every 30 years, lol. I'd much rather take a vacation day for this than one of the other 20 days this school year where one of my kids will be sick.

I rooted for KC because the Cards beat my team in the WS just a few years earlier. (I'm a proud fan of the Brew Crew.) I also met someone back in 1982 that has since become a big deal in KC Sports-Ned Yost.

I used to live in Overland Park, still have family and friends back there. My son flew in from Portland, OR, to attend game 2. My niece was at the parade and posted pics on her facebook page. I actually watched it via live streaming, and I live in Santa Fe, NM.

I moved away in 2008 after a divorce, but the increasing right-wing awfulness going on in Kansas makes me glad I left.

There's a lot not to like about the weather, except that they have the best fall. Once it cools off after the middle of September, it's generally clear skies, maybe two episodes of precipitation (although one of them has been known to be 10 inches of wet snow in early October) at least through Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, the leaves turn shades of purple and peach I've never seen anywhere else.
