General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just voted for Bugs Bunny, Cthulhu, Snidely Whiplash,
Mickey Mouse, Morgan Freeman, a few local crime figures, and others in the Mississippi state elections today. You wouldn't believe how many offices were in the hands of unopposed Republicans and occasionally a Reform candidate or Libertarian. It was ugly. At least half of my ballot were write-ins. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.

(6,409 posts)As for the crime figures, it goes without saying.

(16,846 posts)vote for whoever popped into my brain. I really want people to see how little trust I have in their unopposed candidates.
This state is a mess, and it always has been. In the old days you had unopposed Democrats running, and now it's Republicans. We had about a 20 year transition period, but now we're a one-party state again. Mississippi is in its own time zone, and nothing changes much because the people in control here, no matter what they call themselves, like it this way. It's a hopeless situation, but I still vote.

Or possibly Skeletor.

(16,846 posts)I even voted for the disgraced, corrupt former sheriff of a neighboring county to be our sheriff. The unopposed Republican running for sheriff was handed the job by people behind the scenes, and who knows what their agenda is. You feel powerless in a situation like this.

(58,785 posts)offered the chance to codify business monopolies into a marijuana legalization law. The bill's big backers would be given exclusive rights to grow pot. Of course a lot of the more interested voters may already be too mellow to laugh or cry.

(16,846 posts)the same way that marriage equality did. More and more states will legalize it, and the prohibition states are going to bitch about people bringing weed into their states. It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out in the courts.

(16,846 posts)you can say that you're a former candidate for governor, or what have you. Gives you some creds. I hope you really do run for office one day and win it. We could use good DUers in office, whether it's for the state house or the U.S. Senate.

(78,249 posts)That'd be one less unopposed repuke, if nothing else. And you never know. He might get caught in bed with a live man or a dead woman.

(16,846 posts)would kill my chances of winning political office or serving in that office if, by some miracle, I won. It's just not tenable in my case. I don't even know if we have a Democratic Party structure on the local level here. I never saw one commercial or even a sign for the gubernatorial Democratic candidate. There were only a few offices that had a Democratic candidate running. We have deep systemic problem with this state's opposition parties, and I don't see anything changing anytime soon.

(16,846 posts)The point, I guess, is to make sure that people have a choice. Democrats would lose a number of elections here and it would certainly be discouraging to run over and over without positive results, but that's the only alternative we have. The people would have to be dedicated to the cause, and we simply don't have enough people who are willing to keep losing races over and over in order for people to have a choice and possibly elect candidates in a few races now and then. It would take boundless optimism to keep this up, and that is in short supply these days.

(45,251 posts)Unopposed Democrats, of course. In my life, I've lived in 3 states, all of them blue. I don't think I would know how to be in a red state or even a purple one.

(16,846 posts)I was born at the beginning of the transition faze from being a Democratic state to a Republican state. I've never seen so many unopposed Republicans in my life. But you must have a sense of humor if you're a liberal in Mississippi. Otherwise, you'll walk around angry all the time, and that would be worse for you than anyone else.
I've lived in Mississippi all my life, and I might die here if I don't find a place somewhere else in the next 20-30 years. I really don't want to stay here, but I have a chance to get a house here in Biloxi next year, and I hate to pass that up. But Biloxi isn't like the rest of Mississippi, so maybe I can deal with it. You have to think about the hurricanes, though, so I'm not sure what I'll do.
