An Omaha man was arrested Monday on suspicion of animal cruelty after a dog was found dead from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma.

Nathan C. Mayer, 33, was booked into the Douglas County Correctional Center and is being held until his first court appearance. Mark Gentile of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the dog, an 8-year-old German shepherd named Shoes, belonged to Mayer’s mother.

“A necropsy was conducted and it shows that the dog suffered needlessly for a long period of time before he died,” said Mark Langan of the Nebraska Humane Society.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were called to a hospital about 1:30 a.m. for a report of a man bitten by a dog. The investigation continued at 5137 N. 144th Court, where the dog was found in a white plastic bag.
