After a series of disastrous cable-news interviews and three anemic debate performances, Jeb Bush is finally getting serious about improving his television image. And to do it, hes turning to the man Roger Ailes hires to train Fox News anchors.
According to a source close to the campaign, Bush will be media-coached by Jon Kraushar, a legendary image-maker whos worked with Ailes for decades. In the 1980s, Ailes and Kraushar were business partners at Ailes Communications, the political-consulting shop Ailes founded. It was during this time that Ailes and Krashaur famously coached Jebs father and Dan Quayle to the White House in 1988. A year later, Ailes and Kraushar collaborated on the best-selling book You Are the Message, which has become something of a Bible for public speakers and television pundits. After going their separate ways, Ailes and Kraushar remained close. Fox pundits regularly go to Kraushar for training and Ailes recommends politicians to him. During the 2012 presidential election, Ailes sent Mitt Romneys running mate, Paul Ryan, to Kraushar for help.
Bush was reluctant to improve his television style. He was very defensive about it, one source close to the campaign told me. On the trail, Bush has been outright disdainful of the medium, telling CNN last month that Donald Trump talks about things like hes still on The Apprentice.
But inside the campaign, Bushs poor communications skills have become a source of tension among advisers and donors. One source told me that some senior Bush aides are frustrated that he wears glasses and suits on the trail, which makes it difficult for him to relate to a large swath of GOP primary voters (or at least the Trump ones). His weight has also been an issue. Bush dropped 40 pounds on the Paleo diet in preparation for his run, but the dramatic weight loss has left him appearing ..............

This said, may be the communication team should be changed as well. Way too many sources talking to idiots like that. Who f*ing care whether Bush wears a suit and glasses. I doubt that is what makes him any more or less relatable. But when you cannot write on issues, you have to write on this type of idiocy.
So, frankly, another indictment of the political media and once again a threat to democracy.

(25,250 posts)They're going to force on the American People a false person that they need to create an image for versus a genuine person that has maintained the same image for his complete political career - Bernie.
So does one think that if Jeb becomes President that he is going to be his own person. I don't think so. He's another Repug puppet that will simply be a figurehead and the Presidency will be run behind the scenes by the image makers and advisers that created him. He'd probably make Dick Cheney his VP to boot.

(21,115 posts)I knew that he hired a new campaign Counselor! I knew that the things he was saying were what they told him to motivate him....I am speaking specifically of his "I eat nails before breakfast" phrase...He just doesn't have it in him to come up with something like that on his own. The man is exhausted with the process already....he is a Bush afterall and never has really had to work for anything in his whole life!

(55,745 posts)David Talbot talks with Mother Jones about the book we talked about on DU in 2013:
You Think the NSA Is Bad? Meet Former CIA Director Allen Dulles.
In a new book, David Talbot makes the case that the CIA head under Eisenhower and Kennedy may have been a psychopath.

"What follows," David Talbot boasts in the prologue to his new book The Devil's Chessboard, "is an espionage adventure that is far more action-packed and momentous than any spy tale with which readers are familiar." Talbot, the founder of Salon.com and author of the Kennedy clan study Brothers, doesn't deal in subtlety in his biography of Allen Dulles, the CIA director under presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy, the younger brother of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and the architect of a secretive national security apparatus that functioned as essentially an autonomous branch of government. Talbot offers a portrait of a black-and-white Cold War-era world full of spy games and nuclear brinkmanship, in which everyone is either a good guy or a bad guy. Dulleswho deceived American elected leaders and overthrew foreign ones, who backed ex-Nazis and thwarted left-leaning democratsfalls firmly in the latter camp.
Mother Jones chatted with Talbot about the reporting that went into his 704-page doorstop, the controversy he invited with his discussion of Kennedy-assassination conspiracy theories, and the parallels he sees in today's government intelligence overreach.

MJ: Is that why you chose not to include much about Dulles' childhood or his internal strife or the other types of things that tend to dominate biographies?
DT: I focused on those elements that I thought were important to understanding him. I thought other books covered that ground fairly well before me. But what they left out was the interesting nuances and shadow aspects of Dulles's biography. I think that you can make a case, although I didn't explicitly say this in the book, for Allen Dulles being a psychopath.
They've done studies of people in power, and they all have to be, to some extent, on the spectrum. You have to be unfeeling to a certain extent to send people to their death in war and take the kind of actions that men and women in power routinely have to take. But with Dulles, I think he went to the next step. His own wife and mistress called him "the Shark." His favorite word was whether you were "useful" to him or not. And this went for people he was sleeping with or people he was manipulating in espionage or so on. He was the kind of man that could cold-bloodedly, again and again, send people to their death, including people he was familiar with and supposedly fond of.
There's a thread there between people like Dulles up through Dick Cheney and [Donald] Rumsfeldwho was sitting at Dulles's knee at one point. I was fascinated to find that correspondence between a young Congressman Rumsfeld and Allen Dulles, who he was looking to for wisdom and guidance as a young politician.
MJ: I'm interested to hear you mention Rumsfeld. Do you think the Bush years compared in ruthlessness or secrecy to what was going on under Dulles?
DT: Definitely. That same kind of dynamic was revived or in some ways expanded after 9/11 by the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld administration. Those guys very much were in keeping with the sort of Dulles ethic, that of complete ruthlessness. It's this feeling of unaccountability, that democratic sanctions and regulations don't make sense in today's ruthless world.

(27,315 posts)This is the narrative the media are following. Once Rubio will be the nominee (and they are working on that), they will tell us that he is so more modern and close to people than Hillary Clinton (or Sanders).
Rubio's narrative works for both the principal Democratic candidates and for Bush/Trump and the media have bought into it. So, I tell you, this Bush's narrative is nothing else than trying to force into our throat a Rubio presidency!
