What Does a Tea Partier’s Potential Loss in Kentucky Mean for the GOP’s Chances in 2016?

2014 U.S. Senate candidate and Kentucky businessman Matt Bevin won the Republican nomination for Governor of Kentucky earlier this year by a mere 83 votes in what many political pundits consider to be one of the most bitter elections in modern history.

When Kentuckians head to the polls on Tuesday, however, voters in the reliably-Republican state are likely to elect his opponent, Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway, to the post. According to the latest Huffington Post-Pollster.com analysis of the race, Conway has a three point lead over Bevin statewide:

In the months since, Bevin – who has painted himself as an “outsider” ever since his 2014 campaign against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – has struggled to reunite the party and instead further burned bridges with both the Kentucky GOP and the local media, making a number of rookie candidate mistakes along the way.

For starters, The Washington Post reported that Bevin has gone on record announcing his support for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson in the race for president, despite the fact that Rand Paul is from the Bluegrass State and appeared alongside him at a campaign rally:
