(5,364 posts)I can't understand the clannish mentality so many seem to apply to this issue. It's like "OK, I made it aboard, so you can pull up the gang-plank now?". Why?
Why would I suddenly dis-associate with any of my former working class peers just because ( IF ) I became rich? I could understand a sterile worldview if I was born rich, but then even that shouldn't stop someone from thinking things through to the long view. Being a rich man in a poor country might be rewarding right now but it's immoral, and makes for a destructively unstable situation which would be bad for everyone, rich or not.

(5,364 posts)I'll add some of my former working class peers who were able to retire fairly comfortably due to either grandfathered-in largesse, or inheritance, and who now vote pretty much on the gun issue, and the reason stated in the OP.

(4,522 posts)GOP and TP people I know that, on the surface you can't imagine what on earth they have in common with their party.
The 3 top answers:
Even though I am too poor to afford a gun, I won't vote for anyone who isn't a conservative because they will take the guns.
I got a crappy liberal education (up until I dropped out in 10th grade) that's why my kids will NEVER go to a public school.
The biggest common denominator is poorly educated folks who are scared to death over what they see on the news and can't read well enough to form their own opinions.
Of course the #1 reason people vote GOP - they are scared of becoming a minority.
