Sen. Brown demands Harvard correct record on Elizabeth Warren

By Josh Lederman - 05/25/12 01:44 PM ET

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) is calling on Harvard University President Drew Faust to correct its diversity statistics after it was revealed that his opponent, Democrat Elizabeth Warren, was listed as a minority despite failing to meet federal guidelines to be considered Native American.

Brown's demand followed a Boston Globe report Friday showing that both Harvard, where Warren teaches law, and the federal government have specific criteria determining who can be listed as Native American in diversity statistics provided to the government, and that Warren does not meet those criteria. The report also showed that the university almost always based its statistics on how employees self-identify, calling into question Warren's claim that she was unaware Harvard had listed her as a minority.

"I call on Harvard President Faust to immediately correct the record with the relevant federal agencies and uphold Harvard’s 400-year-old tradition of abiding by the truth," Brown said in a statement.

Harvard did not respond to a phone message and email asking whether the university would accede to Brown's demand and correct its statistics.

2. F**k him. So my son in law, grandchildren and great grandchildren cannot claim their Native American

heritage because they are not enrolled? Enrollment is a legal means to determine who is eligible for tribal benefits not a geneological law that determines when you become white. It is my understanding that she did not get benefits because of her claim. That should be the end of it.

3. When you don't want to run on your record, smear your opponent

it is sad how often this works. How could anyone care about this issue, but like the presidents birth certificate if you talk and talk about it suddenly that's all anyone talk about. Meanwhile no one talks about the actual real thing Scott Brown has done in office to make the lives of Americans worse. No they will get everyone focused on the hair splitting contest on who people think can claim is and isn't a minority.

If he wants to make sure that Harvard's records are correct, he really should demand that they check all of their students and faculty, past and present. In fact, why stop at Harvard?

Scott Brown should be sure to come down hard on all people who claim Indian ancestry without being able to prove it. These people have the gall to say that their great-great-great-grandmother was an Indian but they can't prove it? Well, they should be tracked down. And of course, he doesn't need their votes.

5. Warren's Democratic challenger is criticizing her about it, too

The NYT doesn't say how Marisa DeFranco (who is one step away from getting on the ballot to challenge Elizabeth Warren) is criticizing her handling of the controversy, just that she did:

I hadn't ever heard of her--has anyone else?

is 1/16th...isn't that what she is? My memory isn't the best, but I was sure I read that she was 1/16th, the same as the counsel head of her tribe.

On edit: Anyway, this only matters to those who wouldn't vote for her anyway. What does Brown think he'll gain from having a hissy fit with Harvard?

I guess as new generations are born the degree would decrease. I still think it's a non-issue that Brown won't accomplish anything with, other than looking petty.
