Scalia: The liberal Supreme Court is causing the destruction of our democratic system

US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was extra fiery during a talk at Santa Clara University in California this week, saying in no uncertain terms that the court had been making a lot of bad decisions.

In his speech, Scalia said he believes the "liberal" Supreme Court is heralding the "destruction of our democratic system," according to an account from the SF Gate.

According to Scalia, the court is giving citizens rights the Constitution doesn't specifically guarantee, like gay marriage and federally subsidized health insurance.

Scalia noted that this interpretation of the US Constitution as a so-called living document arose in the 1920s, when Supreme Court justices at the time interpreted the "guarantee of due process of law to protect fundamental rights not explicitly mentioned in constitutional text," according SF Gate.

To Scalia, this was the beginning of a slippery slope that the US will struggle to recover from.

At the bottom of this slippery slope, according to Scalia, is the now-famous Obergefell v. Hodges case that legalized gay marriage across the country. In his dissent, his position is crystal clear: "To allow the policy question of same-sex marriage to be considered and resolved by a select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine is to violate a principle even more fundamental than no taxation without representation: no social transformation without representation."

In the landmark cases the Supreme Court decided this year, Scalia has found himself in the minority. In King v. Burwell, the decision that upheld the Affordable Care Act — aka Obamacare — Scalia derided his fellow justices' interpretation of the law as, "jiggery-pokery," and called the eventual decision in favor of the ACA, "pure applesauce."

When a paper ballot's "right" to equal treatment trumps a voter's right to vote, where is democracy, Justice Scalia? Stooge.

and he was/is duck-hunting buddies with the plaintiff's running-mate.
When referring to Scalia, the title "Justice" is used rather loosely.

If he wants to see the most glaring examples of the Supreme Court heralding the "destruction of our democratic system," he need look no further than his own votes on Citizens United handing "our democratic system" over to the highest bidders, and on gutting the Voting Rights Act enabling widespread voter suppression. Does he even know what democracy is?

Gay marriage and federally subsidized health insurance are somehow undermining democracy? Really?

Wow.

If he is so unhappy with the authority of the Supreme Court as written in the Constitution, he should do the honorable thing and resign.

A RW court is not liberal because Kennedy goes rogue every now and then.

A case saying government can force citizens to buy stuff from private companies is not liberal either.

Honestly, political terms have no meaning whatever anymore.

you buy. By "make you buy," of course, I mean charge you a tax unless you buy. The opinion did not limit the amount of the tax, either.

Not only are his jurisprudence skills and intellect grossly overrated, but now he can't even remember what his job is. Obviously, because that "liberal" SC is the SC where he works.

Time to resign, you judicial gangster! No longer mentally competent. Doesn't even remember he's a supreme court justice, at this very point in time.
