Windows just arrogantly decided that I needed Windows 10 and gave me no choice and just started it with me. That is why I was so bewildered and thought it was Mozilla Firefox, but it wasn't.
Goddamn Windows!
Anyway, it's gone and my Windows 7 is restored! Hallelujah! But I'm out a few bucks for my computer guy to come and get it and figure it out and bring it back to me.
Now I know what all the bitching about Windows versions is about on GD...I used to wonder what the fuss was about. Now I know.
I am humbled, folks.

(15,429 posts)It's the best version of Windows yet, IMO.
Amazing how people cling to their old ways. There are still people that refuse to move on from xp despite the fact 7 was superior in every single way. It will likely be the same 5 years from now there will still be people clinging to 7 even though 10 is far superior.

(15,429 posts)Windows 7 mainstream support under Service Pack 1 already ended:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle
Next stop will be Software through subscription, which is the best model any way. Ongoing support and upgrades are built into the subscription. They've already done this for Office and it's fine, IMO, just a bit different.
Prior methods of software delivery gave the false impression that you actually owned the applications. I'm glad this is ending because nobody ever owned software, it was always licensed.

(5,515 posts)Very business friendly and all around useful. I don't think we'll see a gem like that from Microsoft ever again. A lot of businesses used XP right down until its support ended because it was so useful.
I like Windows 7 almost as much. They got a lot right with that one too.
The Windows UI is bloated garbage now, but Windows 10 is definitely a step in the right direction.

(21,506 posts)And blamed 10 . Which of course is what you wanted to hear.
Nothing wrong with 7 it is a solid OS. 10 is superior though especially for novice users that typically don't keep up with security patches and other updates.
The biggest trouble 10 has right now in my opinion is the upgrade path. It can introduce bugs when upgrading from another OS but when it is done through a clean install it is every bit as solid as 7 and much more secure.
Hopefully your computer guy saved your data and updated 7 for you . If not you should definitely ensure all the windows updates are completed.

I'm sorry something went wrong for CTY, but I love Windows 10. Which is good because its the last windows version they on plan on, ever. From now on, Microsoft will just issue updates on Windows 10.

(65,616 posts)A friend of mine that has almost the exact same build as this one, just had to reformat after 10 kept trying to run 'systen fix' due to a starting error. It got stuck in some kind of loop (that I've seen Win 8 do over and over) and even after trying over 5 system restores nothing worked. It would just go back to that screen.
I say hold on to Win 7 for as long as possible of you that are hooked on it like old XP users were hooked on XP. If you get 10 and it worked great...then you are in the clear.
CTY must have had 10 push off onto the system. The GUI is browserish.

(92,304 posts)10 update to your computer. You can change your settings accordingly so it doesn't automatically push updates without your permission, or you can choose which updates to install.
Microsoft incorporated into Windows 10 a one click feature to return to your previous operating system which is nice.
I agree with you they never should of included Windows 10 as part of the automatic update.
Actually, Windows 10 is actually quite well done, and most people are using it without issue. Windows 8 was a disaster, and Microsoft as much admired that.
The problem is many folks do not like too many changes. I am an MSDN developer, and I am used to change, but the typical user is not

(12,194 posts)I have yet to see a 10 system that was worth a shit for gaming, for example. Email, social media and youtube? Sure. Waste of power time and resources IMO, but each to their own.
Meanwhile, I run 16 game instances of one MMO I play, playing 16 copies of the same game at once with a different character on each...on a stout 7/64 4.5ghz gaming/home theater rig.
All I've experienced with 10 so far is bloat, sluggishness, and frustration each and every time I touch a PC with it, with very few exceptions (count them on one hand with fingers left over "few" . On the other hand, 7 runs anything and everything I throw at it in multiples. A typical session for me, is this:
1 or 2 open DU pages, 2 nautical pages, 12-16 game instances, one page with google up, and regularly a blu ray/other movie in a window in one corner of my screen. On occasion, MAME or other emulators like the neogeo emulator or the cps2 arcade machine emulators on top of those...not that the emulators take much resources...but you get the point.
Not to mention the touch screen thing. I don't desire a cell phone with a big screen. I desire a machine that does exactly what I want, when I want, at the speed I want it done at or faster (sometime yesterday would be perfect). I run on a 49 inch led lcd hdtv (My wife jokingly refers to it as the "bat computer" , and anyone who might try to touch the screen would get their hand slapped.
I've been basically attached at the hip to one PC or another since the day dad brought home a commodore 64 and a stack of TPUG/Byte magazines in the 80s. Thats old school, not 7.

(39,961 posts)things will get better, I think. Although I honestly believe the Vulkan API will be superior going forward, since it will be platform independent, and include the relevant aspects of DX12.
DX12 is Windows 10 only. I have not seen anything compelling enough to migrate thus far. I don't have DX12 hardware, either, so it isn't exactly a priority yet.

(849 posts)I upgraded to 10 on my laptop a few months ago, have no problem trying new OS's.
It ran fine, but I noticed startup and shutdown taking longer and longer.
Ran all the cleanup routines before shutting down, but the time kept growing longer.
Finally gave up and restored back to 7. Sadly though cause I found features in 10
that were really usable, but anything that slows down progressively for no reason
I won't use. I was in IT for over 25 years and have no problem trying upgrades, if they actually help.

(7,020 posts)System settings and control panels are messed up. WiFi troubleshooting is a pain in the ass. 10 will break printer drivers too.
If you are supporting windows systems in the enterprise or academic setting, do not migrate/upgrade.
Best to start with fresh installation in a small uncritical department and test everything live for a year.

(63,912 posts)When I realized I would have a real problem with my Friday art essays I was totally demoralized. The sound not working was crazy and we didn't have the usual sound level controls to even TRY to deal with it. And we tried everything we knew to do before calling for outside help.
The techie said that Windows 7 should support us because we don't use photo imaging stuff that much. I explained to him my system for posting art work every other Friday (upload and download) along with my word processing Documents file he said we should be fine. I was concerned that the day would come when Windows 7 would no longer be supported but he thinks our use just isn't that complicated for us to worry.
Good to know...

(17,865 posts)I followed the directions to the letter to create a thumb drive system restore. It was unsuccessful (tried three times with two different thumb drives). I got on the Microsoft help board and saw a bunch of people had the same problem with at least two other manufacturers. Normally on these boards a Microsoft representative comes on and explains what to do. Silence. Some hackers found a half page long procedure for bypassing the problem. Life is too short to go through this effort for something so simple. I promptly boxed the computer up and sent it back for a refund.
I am going to try to get a refurbished Windows 7 machine if my main laptop dies. I was having problems with it so that is why I purchased the new computer, but it appears to be working better now.

Come the beginning of 2016, Microsoft will get much more assertive in distributing Windows 10 upgrades to consumers and small businesses, the company's top OS executive said Thursday.
Rather than wait for customers running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to request a copy of the new OS -- the practice since June -- Microsoft will instead begin to automatically send the upgrade to PCs via Windows Update, the default security maintenance service.
The push -- which some will see as too pushy by far -- will be a two-step process, with the first kicking in this year, the second in early 2016
