And then, Rubio pounced.
Well, its interesting, he said, noting that Bush has recently praised Arizona Sen. John McCains 2008 presidential campaign comeback as a model for his own White House bid. You know how many votes John McCain missed when he was carrying out that furious comeback that youre modeling after? Jeb, I dont remember you ever complaining about John McCains vote record. The only reason youre doing it now is because were running for the same position and somebody has convinced you that attacking me is going to help you.
It was a devastating charge. And the only thing that Bush could offer in return was stunned silence.

(14,733 posts)He should have said 'You know, Marco, you're right. I SHOULD have complained about John McCain not doing his Senate job at the time. It was wrong then, and it's wrong now.'

(25,322 posts)It's kills me that supposed Dems think Rubio's comeback was devastating when in fact it was childish.

(14,567 posts)That would have likely destroyed Rubio and he is so dense and simple minded he didn't even see it.
Rubio's excusing his not taking votes was to say that Kerry and Obama did the same thing when they were running.
The kill shot was this - "Mr. Rubio, this evening, in front of a national television audience and the entire republican electorate, you have just said that your model for governance is John Kerry and Barrack Obama."
What ever bullshit Rubio babbled after that ... "No, Mr. Rubio, just now, in front of god and country, you said that you model yourself after John Kerry and Barrack Obama ..."

(25,183 posts)as I read the post-mortems, Bush is toast, that's one thing this debate did. His backers will be closing their checkbooks.

(14,567 posts)Trump absolutely can win, Carson would be a disaster for the republicans as their nominee, Cruz would have a hard time ...
But, Rubio is their type of candidate. He LOOKS the part, and has just enough veneer to him that they could prop him up as their singular candidate ...
I don't want any part of Trump, but Rubio is the one who I think is their surest bet if he can clear the primary.

(827 posts)When Marco came back with that McCain line, the response should have been simple and brutal. Rubio teed up the Lloyd Bentsen angle:
"Marco, John McCain has been a Senator almost as long as you've been alive, is a war hero and has more than served his country and his state. I know John McCain, sir. Marco, you're no John McCain"
No way Rubio had a response for that, it would have been all over the news and it would have immediately shown Bush had a cage fighter inside of him.
The fact him and his team didn't chess match that out just shows he's not cut out for the job.
Cosmocat
(14,567 posts)wasn't McCain, it was his saying Kerry and Obama did the same thing.
The kill shot, in a republican primary was to say, "Mr. Rubio, in front of god and country, a national TV audience and the entire republican electorate, you have just declared that your model for governance is John Kerry and Barack Obama ..."

Using his words comparing himself to john kerry and barrack obama is akin to to him comparing himself to satan in their world.
Jeo scarborough said that is what he would have hit him with.

(827 posts)sounds stupid but that shit matters to people. He won't have the commanding physical presence over her that's a must for anyone going up against her. Obama had it and it helped he knew his shit. She'll run circles around him in a debate, amazed people think that'll be a contest.

(7,960 posts)Jeb Bush's heart is not in this. It was probably never in this. He was pushed to get in, probably promised it would be an easy march to the nomination. Then along comes The Donald and all of a sudden his run for glory ceased to be fun.
My guess is he wants out--badly.
Rubio on the other hand is a man who has three qualities. The first is a burning ambition. The second is rather remarkable incompetence. I mean how does a man with all his advantages manage to screw up his personal finances as badly as he has. Finally, he is a remarkable liar, glib, untroubled by facts and aggressive and passionate in defense of his lies when being questioned.
He is the perfect tool for the powers that be.
